Correlating structure and orbital occupation with the stability and mechanical properties of 3d transition metal carbides

I. Khatri et al.

Summary: The study investigated the electronic structures, formation energies, and phonon dispersion curves of transition metal carbides using first principles calculations, proposing a theoretical framework for controlling their stability. Mechanical properties were explored through calculation of elastic tensors and observable properties such as hardness and ductility, demonstrating the correlation between robust mechanical performance and complete filling of bonding orbitals.

Optoelectronic and mechanical properties of the orthogonal and tetragonal Cu2CdGe(SxSe1-x)4 semiconducting system via first principles methods

Summary: This study computationally investigates the mechanical and optoelectronic properties of Cu2CdGe(SxSe1-x)(4) (0 <= x <= 1) alloy systems and suggests that the tetragonal system shows promise as an absorber material for solar cells due to its superior properties compared to the orthorhombic system.

Investigation of hardness in transition metal hexa-nitrides in cubic structure: A first-principles study

S. R. Kandel et al.

Summary: We have studied the properties of 29 transition metal nitrides using density functional theory calculations. Only 5 compounds were found to be both vibrationally and mechanically stable, with CrN6 having the highest Vickers hardness. The hardness is directly proportional to mass density and inversely proportional to M-M and M-N bond lengths. The band structure analysis showed that all stable compounds except HgN6 are metallic in nature. Magnetic properties were found in only 8 compounds.

Prediction of super hardness in transition metal hexa-nitrides from density functional theory computations

S. R. Kandel et al.

Summary: It has been discovered that hexa-nitrides have higher hardness than conventional nitrides in transition metal nitrides. Only eight transition metal nitrides are stable in both mechanics and dynamics. Among them, h-WN6 has a higher hardness, while h-ZnN6 has a lower hardness, determined by crystal structure and composition.

Interrelationship of bonding strength with structural stability of ternary oxide phases of MgSnO3: A first-principles study

B. B. Dumre et al.

Summary: The crystal structures of ternary oxide MgSnO3 were studied using first principles methods. The LiNbO3 structure showed high stability, large bandgap, and low absorption coefficient and reflectivity, making it suitable as a window layer material. The Ilmenite and Perovskite structures, although mechanically stable, were dynamically unstable and could be used as absorber layer materials. The LiNbO3 structure also exhibited high hardness, suggesting potential applications in super-hard materials.

Summary: The study of MgSnN2 using first-principles methods revealed that the disordered rocksalt phase shows thermodynamic metastability and potential as an absorber layer for solar cells, while the disordered wurtzite and orthorhombic phases could be utilized as window layers due to their larger band-gap values.
