Summary: Free energy calculation is crucial in physics, chemistry, and materials research. In this study, we proposed a novel approach utilizing atomic simulations to calculate the free energies of liquid and defective crystals. The method is based on thermodynamic integration and involves two alchemical pathways. It offers a straightforward yet effective solution, avoiding singularities caused by defect diffusion and allowing for comprehensive analysis of the defective crystal's free energy, including anharmonic and configurational entropy contributions.

Junjie Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explored the corrosion mechanism of Fe (100) in SCO2 under applied electric field. The results showed that the direction and intensity of the electric field can influence the corrosion process. The electric field along Z direction promotes the oxidation reaction, while the electric field along -Z and X directions inhibits corrosion. The anticorrosion effect of oblique applied electric field is the most significant.

Corrosion mechanism of lead-bismuth eutectic at grain boundary in ferritic steels and the effect of alloying elements: A first-principles study

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, first-principles calculations were used to investigate the corrosion mechanism of liquid metal embrittlement (LME) by lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at grain boundaries in ferritic steels. The effects of alloying elements Nb and V were also considered. The results showed that lead and bismuth were prone to permeation along the grain boundaries, leading to a significant decrease in grain boundary strength. It was also found that bismuth exhibited greater LME sensitivity than lead, and Nb and V had a hindering effect on crack generation caused by lead and bismuth.

Atomistic simulation of α-Fe(100)-lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) solid-liquid interface

Ting Zhou et al.

Summary: Classical molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the behaviors of body-centered cubic (bcc) Fe(100)-liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) solid-liquid interface, revealing a preference for Fe atoms to bind with Bi atoms over Pb atoms. Significant thermal vibrations of liquid Bi and Pb atoms perpendicular to the interface were observed, with interactions between Fe and liquid LBE increasing noticeably within the temperature range of 823 to 873 K. This indicates a critical temperature range for the interaction between Fe(100) and liquid LBE, consistent with the designed operating temperature for LBE coolant.

Leaching and Reactivity at the Sodium Aluminosilicate Glass-Water Interface: Insights from a ReaxFF Molecular Dynamics

Hicham Jabraoui et al.

Summary: The study reveals that at the glass-water interface, ion exchange can occur as Na+ ions leave their initial positions and are replaced by H+ ions or another diffused Na+ ions. The high affinity between water and Na+ ions leads to the release of Na+ ions into the bulk water. Additionally, oxygen-bearing functional groups can form through protonation of NBO sites or filling defects with OH- from water molecules.

Summary: This study investigated the oxidation behavior of nanoscale 3C-SiC in O-2 and CO2 using a ReaxFF MD simulation. The results showed that the C-terminated face has lower oxidative stability, and the activation energy of 3C-SiC in CO2 is higher than in O-2, indicating a slower chemical reaction in CO2. There was no obvious coupling effect between CO2 and O-2 during the oxidation process.
