Effect of polymer nanoparticle morphology on fracture toughness enhancement of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites

Na Ning et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the toughening effect of nanoparticle (NP) on epoxy resins and its transferability to carbon fiber reinforced composites. The results show that core/shell particles, especially with the soft polymer as the core and the rigid polymer as the shell, have a significant enhancement effect. Effective toughening of the composites requires a combination of well dispersed and strong particle-resin and resin matrix-fiber interfaces.

On mode-I and mode-II interlaminar crack migration and R-curves in carbon/epoxy laminates with hybrid toughening via core-shell rubber particles and thermoplastic micro-fibre veils

Mehmet Cagatay Akbolat et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of hybrid toughening on carbon fiber/epoxy laminates, and finds that hybrid toughening significantly enhances fracture energy and R-curve behavior by intrinsic and extrinsic toughening mechanisms. Fractography analysis shows that hybrid toughening can constrain crack propagation and absorb more energy.

A Short Review of Recent Progress in Improving the Fracture Toughness of FRP Composites Using Short Fibers

Yongan Wang et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced plastic composite laminates are widely used in engineering fields, but their interlayer performance is relatively poor, limiting their overall performance. Short fiber toughening is a simple and effective method to improve interlaminate properties. This review paper summarizes the latest research progress in short fiber interlaminate toughening, discusses the mechanisms, current problems, and future development directions.

Zhiyuan Jiang et al.

Summary: In this research, a PEEK nanocomposite containing 10 wt% of well-dispersed MWCNT was successfully prepared and showed significantly improved mechanical properties and water absorption compared to a benchmark material. The enhanced properties were attributed to stronger intermolecular interaction and higher energy barrier for chain mobility in the PEEK/MWCNT system.

Yanjia Zhang et al.

Summary: A rigid-and-flexible interphase was established by a starlike copolymer on the surface of carbon fibers, providing excellent stress-transfer capability and enhancing both transverse fiber bundle test (TFBT) strength and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) in composite materials. The rigid inner modulus intermediate layer and energy absorption efficiency from the flexible outer layer contributed to the improved mechanical properties.

Pascal Van Velthem et al.

Summary: The addition of phenoxy thermoplastic and core-shell rubber toughening agents in equal weight to a CFRP high performance epoxy composite leads to a remarkable synergistic increase in fracture toughness by 130% and about 75% improvement in interlaminar shear strength, compared to using a single toughener. The study also shows that the synergy can be further optimized for potentially achieving the same level as unreinforced systems.
