Design of bendable sandwich sheets with 3D printed CFRP cores via multi-stage topology optimization

Jingwei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new design strategy that integrates density-based topology optimization with a multi-stage genetic algorithm to optimize material layout for bendable sandwich sheets. The optimized sandwich topologies can withstand potential failures under given bending conditions, showing the validity of the proposed topology optimization strategy. This method has the potential to design bendable sandwich sheets with arbitrary material combinations and expand the application envelope of lightweight sandwich structures.

Investigation on manufacturing and low-velocity impact performance of all-composite sandwich structure with S-type foldcore

Yong Chen et al.

Summary: A novel all-composite sandwich structure with S-type composite foldcore was designed and fabricated. Impact tests were conducted on the sandwich structure with varying impact locations. The results showed that impact position had a significant influence on the impact resistance and damage mode. A three-dimensional progressive damage mode was developed to predict the damage evolution of the composite structure, which agreed well with experimental results.

Load-bearing capacity and failure mechanism of integrated fluted-core composite sandwich cylinders

Haiyang Yang et al.

Summary: Fluted-core sandwich composites offer great potential in lightweight engineering applications. This study designed and fabricated trapezoidal fluted-core sandwich composite cylinders made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics to improve deformation stability. The effects of circumferential cell number and wall thickness on bearing characteristics and failure mechanism were assessed. The results showed that increasing cell number and wall thickness could improve critical local buckling load and enhance specific buckling load.

Study of impact damage on composite laminates induced by strip impactor using DIC and infrared thermography

Hongliang Tuo et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact damage caused by strip impactors and residual mechanical performance of composite laminates using DIC and infrared thermography. A continuum damage model and a cohesive model were utilized to simulate the intralaminar and interlaminar behaviors, respectively. The results indicate that the delamination area and residual load capacity decrease as the impact angle increases. Compression after impact (CAI) process leads to strain concentration in the damage area and local buckling. Subsequently, delamination and matrix damage occur, followed by fiber damage. The composite laminates collapse when the fiber damage area covers the whole width of the damage area.

Nejc Novak et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact and blast resistance of sandwich panels with uniform and functionally graded TPMS cellular cores. The computational models were validated using experimental compression tests of different TPMS cellular structures. The introduction of graded porosity using thickness and cell size variation allows for tailored mechanical and deformation response of the TPMS structures and TPMS filled sandwich panels.

A new multifunctional carbon fiber honeycomb sandwich structure with excellent mechanical and thermal performances

Weikai Zhao et al.

Summary: The paper addresses the poor thermal conduction performance of carbon fiber composite honeycomb structures and presents a fabrication strategy for a multifunctional carbon fiber honeycomb sandwich structure (MCFHS) that can effectively dissipate heat and bear loads. Theoretical models are developed to predict the thermal conductivity and strength of MCFHS, showing reasonable agreement with experiments. It is shown through experiments that MCFHS has excellent thermal and mechanical performance, with the potential to provide new opportunities for lightweight multifunctional honeycombs.

Masoud Mehrabian et al.

Summary: In this study, the 3D digital image correlation technique was used to study the tensile behaviors of single-lap bolted and hybrid bolted-bonded joints. The results show that hybridization can mitigate stress concentration around bolts, delay damage initiation, reduce secondary bending and twisting, and improve strength retention, while maintaining a balance between bypass and bearing loads in multi-bolt fastened joints.
