Effect of steel fiber-volume fraction and distribution on flexural behavior of Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete by digital image correlation technique

Shaoqiang Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of steel fiber volume fraction and distribution on the flexural behavior of UHPFRC, revealing a correlation between fiber distribution characteristics and flexural response. Increasing fiber volume fraction results in a more zigzag crack propagation path, significantly affecting the flexural behavior of UHPFRC.

Experimental Investigation of the TRM-to-Masonry Bond after Exposure to Elevated Temperatures: Cementitious and Alkali-Activated Matrices of Various Densities

Paraskevi D. Askouni et al.

Summary: Limited research has been done on the effect of high temperatures on the bond between textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) and masonry. In this study, masonry prisms with double-layered TRM strips were exposed to 200°C and 400°C for 1 hour and then tested under shear bond conditions. The results showed that exposure to elevated temperatures did not change the failure mode of the specimens. The residual bond capacity of the TRM systems decreased linearly with increasing temperature. The alkali-activated TRM systems performed better in terms of bond strength compared to cement-based systems. All systems retained approximately 50% of their original bond strength after heating at 400°C. Lightweight matrices provided comparable or better heat protection at the TRM/masonry interface depending on the type of binder.

Summary: This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the flexural behavior of RC one-way slabs strengthened with TRGM. The results show that TRGM can delay crack development and enhance flexural capacity of slabs, and increasing number of strengthening layers and decreasing spacing can increase the flexural capacity.

Assessment and modeling of the debonding failure of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) systems

Ahmed Mandor et al.

Summary: This paper developed a model to predict debonding strains in reinforced concrete members strengthened with fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix systems. The study identified key parameters affecting debonding mechanisms and developed three models using nonlinear regression analysis to accurately predict debonding strains. Two of the models demonstrated excellent prediction performance, while neglecting the tensile strength of the concrete substrate in the third model resulted in a lower prediction accuracy.

Experimental and analytical study on the behavior of RC beams with externally bonded carbon-FRCM composites

Liangliang Wei et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that externally bonded carbon fabric reinforced cementitious matrix (carbonFRCM) can effectively enhance the load-carrying capacity of RC beams. For multilayer carbon-FRCM design, two layers of carbon fabric is an optimal choice. The utilization efficiency of carbon fabric is slightly higher in the fabric slippage failure compared to the peeling-off of concrete cover.

Damage-based finite-element modelling of in-plane loaded masonry walls repaired with FRCM

Jean-Patrick Plassiard et al.

Summary: Results of the study show that the masonry wall repair using textile reinforced mortar achieved recovery and even an increase in initial stiffness and strength. Finite-element simulations were conducted to assess the gain in strength for different degrees of wall damage, along with investigating crack patterns and effects of different repair configurations.

Catechol-modified epoxy coatings with high adhesive strength on saturated concrete substrate

Dewen Sun et al.

Summary: A series of catechol-modified epoxy resin biomimetic coatings with high adhesive strength on saturated concrete substrate were designed and synthesized. The adhesive properties can be improved by forming hydrogen bonds and coordination complexes in the interface of coating and saturated concrete substrate. Adding a proper amount of catechol groups can enhance the adhesive strength of epoxy coatings on saturated concrete substrate.

Analyzing the effect of misalignment on single-filament carbon fiber tensile testing via stereoscopic computer vision imaging

Cole A. Love-Baker et al.

Summary: Understanding the constitutive properties of carbon fibers is crucial for high-resolution composite simulations and the development of low-cost alternative precursor materials. Single-fiber tensile testing is a useful tool for measuring CF properties, but challenges exist due to factors such as small fiber diameter, fiber brittleness, and required nanoscale/microscale resolution. Fiber misalignment is identified as a critical factor affecting the accuracy of measured properties, and a robust method of fiber alignment using stereoscopic computer vision is proposed to improve accuracy in testing.

Characterizing environment-dependent fracture mechanisms of ceramic matrix composites via digital image correlation

Clifton H. Bumgardner et al.

Summary: A novel methodology using in situ stereoscopic digital image correlation was employed to assess the fracture mechanics of SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites. The study revealed that cracks propagate along the specimen length during hermeticity testing, and that heat treatment in open air results in decreased flexural properties and brittle failure.
