Persisting with a music career despite the insecurity: When social and motivational resources really matter

Stacey L. Parker et al.

Summary: Drawing on conservation of resources theory and self-determination theory, this study investigated the roles of coworker support and work motivation as buffers for the negative consequences of career insecurity for professional musicians. Findings suggest that musicians with low career insecurity and higher quality motivation are less likely to engage in problem drinking, and those with high coworker support and high autonomous motivation experience less emotional exhaustion. Additionally, the study found that career insecurity may lead to greater intentions to leave the profession for most musicians, except for those with high controlled motivation and access to supportive coworkers.
