Unzipping polymers significantly enhance energy flux of aluminized composites

Haiyang Wang et al.

Summary: This paper describes a new approach to enhance the energy delivery rate of pyrotechnics by using an unzipping polymer. By localizing the heat feedback near the reaction front through driving the endothermic unzipping chemistry, gas liberation near the flame front and particle propulsion away from the burning surface are achieved to minimize agglomeration and sintering. The study demonstrates a > 1500% faster energy release rate from the aluminothermic reaction compared to a conventional polymer binder.

Time-resolved size, velocity, and temperature statistics of aluminum combustion in solid rocket propellants

Andrew W. Marsh et al.

Summary: The study combines digital in-line holography and two-color imaging pyrometry to obtain spatially and temporally resolved aluminum agglomerate particle dynamics, capturing the combustion histories for thousands of particles per experiment. Initial results show variation in initial acceleration but similar steady-state velocities among aluminum agglomerates of similar size, with average velocity decreasing as particle size increases. Large agglomerates exhibit a convergence to an average projected temperature of around 2500 K as they move away from the propellant surface.

Modelling and simulation of field directed linear assembly of aerosol particles

Prithwish Biswas et al.

Summary: This study discusses the possibility of using external magnetic and electric fields to tune the structure and fractal dimension of aggregates in the aerosol phase. The induced dipole moments in primary nanoparticles can lead to the formation of linear chain-like aggregates. The transition of aggregate structures depends on particle sizes, temperature, and applied field strength, and can be achieved practically for a range of particle sizes.

Imaging pyrometry for most color cameras using a triple pass filter

Kevin McNesby et al.

Summary: By combining the Planck blackbody emission law, optical filters, and digital image processing, most commercial color cameras can be used as imaging pyrometers for flames and explosions. The system utilizes a triple-pass optical filter and computer algorithms to capture and process temperature information accurately, providing temperature measurement and color image display simultaneously.
