Nonlinear flame response modelling by a parsimonious set of ordinary differential equations

Gregor Doehner et al.

Summary: This work presents a parsimonious set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that accurately describes the dynamics of a laminar premixed flame. The model requires only four constants to be calibrated and is trained on high-fidelity numerical simulations (CFD). The results are validated against CFD data.

Designing variable reflection coefficient for upstream and downstream terminations to study their effect on flame thermoacoustics

Vertika Saxena et al.

Summary: This paper presents the design, construction, and experimental results of a generic combustion system with variable reflection coefficient devices. The objective is to study burner/flame stability in different acoustic configurations and determine the burner's figure of merit. The experiments show that the burner with the smallest hole diameter has the largest stable region.

Coupling of Acoustic and Intrinsic Modes in 1D Combustor Models

Nalini Kanta Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the theoretical examination of a new type of thermo-acoustic instability in combustors, arising from the coupling between conventional acoustic modes and recently discovered flame intrinsic modes. The study reveals the transition from distinct acoustic and flame intrinsic modes to coupled modes as the interaction increases. Analytical findings on the instability domain due to coupling in the parameter space are provided, capturing all possible coupling scenarios effectively.

Investigation on the intrinsic thermoacoustic instability of a lean-premixed swirl combustor with an acoustic liner

Liangliang Xu et al.

Summary: The combustion instability of a premixed swirl combustor was investigated experimentally and theoretically, revealing that both intrinsic thermoacoustic (ITA) mode and cavity acoustic mode play major roles. The addition of an acoustic liner with bias flow was effective in suppressing the combustion oscillations for the cavity acoustic mode, but not for the ITA mode. Additionally, the ITA instability can be triggered or enhanced by increasing the bias flow Mach number.
