Experimental analysis and theoretical lift-off criterion for H 2 /air flames stabilized on a dual swirl injector

Sylvain Marragou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stabilization mechanisms of partially premixed H2/air flames on a coaxial dual swirl injector under atmospheric conditions. Different flame stabilization modes are observed depending on the injector's geometry and operating conditions. The flame can either stabilize on the injector lips as a diffusion flame or be lifted from the injector and burn mainly in a partially premixed regime.

NO x pathways in lean partially premixed swirling H2-air turbulent flame

T. Capurso et al.

Summary: Today's climate and energy challenges are driving the use of decarbonised and renewable alternative fuels, such as hydrogen, in power generation and transportation. This study proposes high-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES) with detailed NOx analyzes to assess the production of NOx in a hydrogen flame. A novel kinetic scheme is developed to accurately predict the complex transport phenomena and NO dynamic formation in lean turbulent hydrogen flames. The study provides valuable insights for understanding and controlling NOx emissions from hydrogen combustion.

Comparison of a finite volume and two Lattice Boltzmann solvers for swirled confined flows

A. Aniello et al.

Summary: In this study, several unsteady flow solvers were compared in a swirling flow configuration typically found in aeronautical combustion chambers. The results showed that the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) solvers were faster than the finite volume solver, but the finite volume solver performed better in terms of performance scaling.

Stabilization regimes and pollutant emissions from a dual fuel CH4/H2 and dual swirl low NOx burner

S. Marragou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability and pollutant emissions of burning hydrogen in gas turbines. The results show that introducing swirl in the central hydrogen stream can achieve aerodynamically stabilized flames and reduce thermal stress and NOx emissions on the burner. Moreover, a small recess in the hydrogen injector extends the operability range of the burner and keeps NOx emissions low even with pure hydrogen.

On the impact of H2-enrichment on flame structure and combustion dynamics of a lean partially-premixed turbulent swirling flame

P. W. Agostinelli et al.

Summary: Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) is used to analyze the impact of H-2-enrichment on the flame structure and combustion dynamics of a lean partially-premixed turbulent CH4/Air swirling flame. The results show that as the fuel fraction of hydrogen increases, the flame length reduces due to the increase in laminar flame speed and the heat release rate distribution becomes more compact. At 50% H-2, the study predicts a bi-modal thermoacoustic oscillation, with two main frequencies corresponding to the quarter and chamber modes of the system.

Impact of co- and counter-swirl on flow recirculation and liftoff of non-premixed oxy-flames above coaxial injectors

A. Degeneve et al.

Summary: The direction of swirl has a significant impact on the flame shape and the intensity of the central recirculation zone in non-premixed oxy-flames. Counter-swirl leads to longer flames, while co-swirl produces more compact flames.

Summary: High-fidelity Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were used to study the impact of hydrogen injection on a lean turbulent CH4/Air premixed flame, with an Analytically Reduced Chemistry (ARC) mechanism and different transport modeling strategies. The results showed large variations in mixture properties and flame structure, highlighting the importance of using complex transport properties in LES involving hydrogen combustion.

Static mesh adaptation for reliable large eddy simulation of turbulent reacting flows

P. W. Agostinelli et al.

Summary: The study proposes a static mesh refinement strategy based on flow physical quantities, detecting areas of interest for flow physics and recommending grid adaptation to enhance the accuracy of large eddy simulations. The strategy is detailed on two reacting-flow problems and shown to significantly improve predictions of flame stabilization.
