Investigation on the intrinsic thermoacoustic instability of a lean-premixed swirl combustor with an acoustic liner

Liangliang Xu et al.

Summary: The combustion instability of a premixed swirl combustor was investigated experimentally and theoretically, revealing that both intrinsic thermoacoustic (ITA) mode and cavity acoustic mode play major roles. The addition of an acoustic liner with bias flow was effective in suppressing the combustion oscillations for the cavity acoustic mode, but not for the ITA mode. Additionally, the ITA instability can be triggered or enhanced by increasing the bias flow Mach number.

Low-Order Modeling to Investigate Clusters of Intrinsic Thermoacoustic Modes in Annular Combustors

Guillaume J. J. Fournier et al.

Summary: A recent study found that the intrinsic thermoacoustic modes in annular combustors come in significant numbers and exhibit clustering behavior. An analytical model of a typical annular combustor was derived using Riemann invariants and Bloch theory, describing the longitudinal combustor with frequency-dependent reflection coefficients. The model explains the clustering phenomena of ITA modes associated with different azimuthal orders and proposes a phasor analysis to determine the validity of a 1D model for describing thermoacoustic behavior.

A categorization of marginally stable thermoacoustic modes based on phasor diagrams

Kah Joon Yong et al.

Summary: Phasor diagrams are used to analyze thermoacoustic modes in a duct with velocity-sensitive flame and ideal closed/open acoustic boundary conditions. The diagrams reveal characteristic features of marginally stable ITA modes, such as sign changes of velocity and pressure fluctuations across the flame, and transitions between acoustic and ITA modes can be achieved by adjusting the gain of the flame transfer function.
