Effects of non-thermal termolecular reactions on detonation development in hydrogen (H2)/methane (CH4)- air mixtures

Swapnil Desai et al.

Summary: The binary fuel blend of H-2/CH4 is a promising hydrogen-enriched hydrocarbon fuel for SI engines. However, the occurrence of super-knock and the precise mechanism behind it are still not fully understood. Recent studies have shown the presence of non-thermal reactions in the premixed flames of H-2/CH4 fuel blends, which can significantly affect the ignition and detonation processes. This study investigates the evolution of deflagration front to detonation wave in H-2/CH4-air mixtures under SI engine conditions, considering the effects of non-thermal reactions. The results demonstrate that non-thermal reactions can delay spontaneous ignition and enhance the strength of the developing detonation.

Termolecular chemistry facilitated by radical-radical recombinations and its impact on flame speed predictions

Yujie Tao et al.

Summary: Recent theoretical studies have shown that termolecular chemistry can be facilitated through reactions of flame radicals or O2 with highly-energized collision complexes. This work investigated radical-radical recombination reactions induced termolecular chemistry and its impact on combustion modeling, finding that nonthermal chemistry has a noticeable impact on simulated flame speeds.

Automated discovery of influential chemically termolecular reactions in energetic material combustion: A case study for RDX

Rodger E. Cornell et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that chemically termolecular reactions play a significant role in the global kinetics of certain combustion systems, prompting the need for their consideration in gas-phase models. This study investigates the impact of chemically termolecular reactions on energetic materials like RDX, revealing their significant potential influence on species profiles, radicals, and temperature gradients. The analysis identifies around 20-40 key chemically termolecular reactions for further quantification, emphasizing the importance of including these reactions in energetic material models as well.

Combustion chemistry in the twenty-first century: Developing theory-informed chemical kinetics models

James A. Miller et al.

Summary: Theoretical chemistry, especially theoretical chemical kinetics, has become increasingly important in developing combustion chemical kinetics models over the past 20 to 25 years. Theoretical methods for obtaining rate parameters are now competitive in accuracy with experiments, especially for small molecules. In addition, theoretical methods can handle conditions that experiments often cannot.
