Tammann Analysis of the Molecular Weight Selection of Polymorphic Crystal Nucleation in Symmetric Racemic Poly(lactic acid) Blends

Yucheng He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystallization kinetics and crystal polymorphism of PLA blends with different molecular weights using Flash DSC measurement and confocal Raman spectroscopy. The results show that high molecular weights affect the crystal morphology and suppress the nucleation rates of stereocomplex crystals, resulting in the dominance of homocrystals.

Enhanced crystallization behavior and stiffness-toughness balance of polylactide/poly(propylene carbonate)/nucleating agent blends

Yunrui Long et al.

Summary: Both PPC and TMBH were used to modify the crystallization behavior and stiffness-toughness balance of PLA. A sea-island phase structure was observed in PLA/PPC blends, which gradually transformed into a bi-continuous structure with increasing PPC concentration. The addition of PPC had little nucleating effect on PLA, resulting in a decrease in tensile properties. On the other hand, the addition of TMBH effectively enhanced the crystallization ability of PLA. The dimension of PPC domains and PLA crystals in ternary blends was smaller than their binary counterparts due to the presence of TMBH, leading to improved tensile toughness and brittle-ductile transition.

Super Tough Polylactic Acid Plasticized with Epoxidized Soybean Oil Methyl Ester for Flexible Food Packaging

Arkadiusz Zych et al.

Summary: The research team developed flexible PLA materials by plasticizing them with renewable and biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil methyl ester, achieving elongations at break of nearly 800%. The lubricating effect of the plasticizer allowed for more sustainable extrusion at a low temperature of 140 degrees C, preventing PLA degradation and saving energy in the process. Plasticized films also produced less acoustic noise during handling, which is important for food packaging applications.

Bio-based Thermoplastic Polyhydroxyurethanes Synthesized from the Terpolymerization of a Dicarbonate and Two Diamines: Design, Rheology, and Application in Melt Blending

Georges R. Younes et al.

Summary: The terpolymerization of bio-based diglycerol dicarbonate (DGC) and Priamine 1074 resulted in amorphous thermoplastic polyhydroxyurethanes (TPHUs) with random or block copolymer-like segmented structures. The TPHUs exhibited nanophase separation mainly caused by DGC, while the introduction of crystallinity and chain ordering was observed with DAD. Blends of PDMS-based TPHUs with PLA were found to be partially miscible and showed potential applications as toughening agents and plasticizers for PLA.

Modulating Mechanical and Shape-Memory Properties while Mitigating Degradation-Induced Inflammation of Polylactides by Pendant Aspirin Incorporation

Xiaowen Xu et al.

Summary: By copolymerizing aspirin-functionalized glycolide with D,L-lactide, this study successfully enhanced the thermal processing, toughness, and shape-memory efficiency of PLA-based implants while mitigating degradation-induced chronic inflammation. The inclusion of aspirin pendants in the copolymers significantly improved mechanical properties and shape-memory performance, making them a promising option for biomedical applications.

High Toughness Polyurethane toward Artificial Muscles, Tuned by Mixing Dynamic Hard Domains

Qiqi Qu et al.

Summary: A new strategy based on mixed dynamic hard segments was proposed to improve self-healing behavior and mechanical performance of polyurethanes. The designed polyurethanes showed uniform microphase separation structures and insufficient crystallinity, with potential applications in flexible conductors and synthetic muscles. The research confirmed the feasibility of synthetic PUs by simply changing the mole ratio of dual chain extenders and may inspire related engineering fields requiring excellent self-healing efficiency and extraordinary robustness.

Highly-modified polylactide transparent blends with better heat-resistance, melt strength, toughness and stiffness balance due to the compatibilization and chain extender effects of methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer

Yujun Jiang et al.

Summary: A core-shell modifier consisting of cross-linked acrylate and silicone copolymer as core and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as shell (PASi-g-PMMA) was used to toughen brittle polylactide (PLA). The addition of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) (MG) further enhanced the modification efficiency of PASi-g-PMMA, leading to improved heat-resistance, melt strength, transparency, toughness and stiffness balance in PLA blends.
