Characterisation of Phantom Limb Pain in Traumatic Lower-Limb Amputees

Andre Tadeu Sugawara et al.

Summary: PLP is not a single symptom, but a combination of different sensations and perceptions that require a focused and guided medical history for accurate diagnosis. A total of 55 eligible patients were included in the study, with most being young male above-knee amputees in the preprosthetic phase of rehabilitation. The median PLP VAS was 60 (50-79.3) mm, with an average frequency of 3.94 (2.5-4.38) occurrences per week, and the most common descriptor was movement of the phantom limb (70.91%). Predictors for specific PLP descriptors include above-knee amputation, prosthetic phase, higher education level, and greater PLP intensity by VAS.
