Approaching automated applicator digitization from a new angle: Using sagittal images to improve deep learning accuracy and robustness in high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy

Luca Leon Weishaupt et al.

Summary: This study achieved automated segmentation of treatment applicators in high-dose-rate brachytherapy using deep learning and density-based clustering algorithms. The proposed method demonstrated submillimeter agreement with manual segmentation and showed advantages in geometric accuracy and time efficiency. This automated segmentation approach has the potential to improve treatment quality and consistency while reducing the patient's time under anesthesia.

Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology Consensus Guidelines of combined intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy for gynecological cancers

Naoya Murakami et al.

Summary: This article discusses the effectiveness and safety of intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy (IC/IS) in treating large and irregularly shaped uterine cervical cancer patients. Compared to conventional intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT), IC/IS is more invasive and thus has a slower implementation speed. The article aims to provide practical and comprehensive guidance for radiation oncologists and medical physicists who wish to start IC/IS, and to accelerate the nationwide utilization of IC/IS by sharing the Japanese approach to managing locally advanced uterine cervical cancer.

Contemporary image-guided cervical cancer brachytherapy: Consensus imaging recommendations from the Society of Abdominal Radiology and the American Brachytherapy Society

Megan C. Jacobsen et al.

Summary: This article presents recommendations for the use of imaging in the evaluation and procedural guidance of brachytherapy for cervical cancer patients. Through the assessment of an expert panel, data-driven guidance is provided for imaging protocol development, interpretation, and reporting. The results show that image-guidance can reduce the incidence of uterine perforation, and CT or MRI are the preferred methods for acquiring post-implant images. Pre-brachytherapy T2-weighted MRI can be used as a reference for contouring the high-risk clinical target volume in treatment planning with CT. Reference CT and MRI protocols are provided.

Xuesong Dai et al.

Summary: This review investigates safety issues in the design and use of low-dose-rate (LDR) prostate BT robots. Different types of BT robots were analyzed to develop safety requirements, and recommendations for future development were provided. The study suggests that the transrectal approach for prostate seed implantation may be safer than the traditional transperineal approach, and calls for further research on needle control, robotic automation, and seed injection equipment.
