Senescence atlas reveals an aged-like inflamed niche that blunts muscle regeneration

Victoria Moiseeva et al.

Summary: This study reveals that senescent cells are crucial components of the skeletal muscle regenerative niche and inhibit regeneration. Through single-cell transcriptomics and senescent-cell enrichment sorting, different types of senescent cells were identified and isolated from damaged muscles of young and old mice. The findings demonstrate that senescent cells create an aged-like inflamed niche and impair stem cell proliferation and regeneration.

The impact of senescence on muscle wasting in chronic kidney disease

Summary: In this study, the researchers found that senescent muscle precursor cells (MPCs) may contribute to muscle wasting in CKD by producing inflammatory cytokines. The use of senolytics improved muscle wasting and muscle strength, and restored MPC function.

Nutritional and exercise interventions in individuals with sarcopenic obesity around retirement age: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Doris Eglseer et al.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the effectiveness of nutritional and exercise interventions for sarcopenic obesity in retired individuals. The study found that resistance training and resistance or aerobic training combined with protein supplementation can significantly reduce body fat, increase muscle mass and strength, and improve gait speed. Increased protein intake combined with exercise can further reduce fat mass.

Definition and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity: ESPEN and EASO consensus statement*

Lorenzo M. Donini et al.

Summary: Sarcopenic obesity (SO), the coexistence of excess adiposity and low muscle mass/function, is common in individuals with obesity and negatively impacts patient outcomes. This article presents an initiative by ESPEN and EASO to establish a consensus on the definition and diagnostic criteria for SO. The proposed diagnostic procedure includes assessment of skeletal muscle function and body composition to confirm the diagnosis of SO. The authors advocate for the implementation of these criteria in routine clinical practice.

Definition and Diagnostic Criteria for Sarcopenic Obesity: ESPEN and EASO Consensus Statement

Lorenzo M. Donini et al.

Summary: Loss of skeletal muscle mass and function is common in individuals with obesity. The co-existence of excess adiposity and low muscle mass/function, known as sarcopenic obesity (SO), negatively impacts patient outcomes. However, the lack of a universally established definition and diagnostic criteria for SO hampers prevention and treatment efforts.

Mitochondrial uncoupling attenuates sarcopenic obesity by enhancing skeletal muscle mitophagy and quality control

Wagner S. Dantas et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial uncoupling with BAM15 reduces body weight by increasing energy expenditure, improves muscle mass, strength, and activity while reducing inflammation, limiting ER stress, apoptosis, and muscle protein degradation in a mouse model of sarcopenic obesity. These findings suggest that BAM15 may protect against age-related decline in muscle mass and function through bioenergetic adaptations.

Phase angle derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis as a marker for predicting sarcopenia

Haotian Wu et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia refers to the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, which can be caused by various factors. Phase angle (PhA), measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis, has shown promising potential as a marker for sarcopenia in the future.

Sex Differences in Adiposity and Cardiovascular Diseases

Haoyun Li et al.

Summary: Body fat distribution is an important predictor of medical outcomes, and it is closely associated with the risks of cardiovascular diseases compared to overall adiposity. The review focuses on the sexual dimorphism, biological clues, and genetic traits that are specific to body fat distribution. Understanding the sex determinations on body fat distribution and obesity is crucial for improving the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: The study revealed that low muscle mass as measured by deuterated creatine (D3Cr) dilution is associated with increased risks of disability in activities of daily living, mobility tasks, and all-cause mortality in older men, while appendicular lean mass measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was not associated with these outcomes.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the ability and applicability of calf circumference, SARC-F, and SARC-CalF for screening sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults. The study found that calf circumference had higher sensitivity and specificity for sarcopenia screening compared to SARC-F and SARC-CalF, while SARC-F and SARC-CalF had high specificity but were susceptible to preceding factors.

Therapeutic strategies for sarcopenic obesity: a systematic review

Eleonora Poggiogalle et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that exercise-based interventions are effective in improving lean mass and reducing total adiposity in individuals with sarcopenic obesity. Resistance training has been found to be a common approach with beneficial effects on body composition, while novel strategies such as electrical acupuncture and whole-body electromyostimulation with nutritional supplementation have also shown promise. However, the overall significance of these interventions is limited by a lack of uniformity in the definition of sarcopenic obesity and conflicting results from nutritional supplement studies. Further research is needed to identify optimal treatment options for sarcopenic obesity in different age groups beyond just the elderly population.

Summary: This study developed calf circumference (CC) cutoff points and found a strong correlation between CC and appendicular lean mass in a diverse NHANES population sample. Adjusting CC for adiposity using BMI revealed specific cutoff values for low CC and supported the use of BMI-adjusted CC values for participants outside the normal-weight BMI range.
