Summary: The present study suggests that Alemtuzumab treatment can improve certain domains of physical function and cognitive function in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, while stabilizing physiological and physical function, as well as patient-reported outcomes.

Performance validity in outpatients with multiple sclerosis and cognitive complaints

Summary: The study finds that suboptimal performance frequently occurs in patients with multiple sclerosis and cognitive complaints, with 20% displaying invalid performance. Patients with lower performance validity scores tend to have lower cognitive functioning, lower education, be male, and have higher disability levels.

A promising cognitive screener in multiple sclerosis: The NIH toolbox cognition battery concords with gold standard neuropsychological measures

Heena R. Manglani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the construct validity of the National Institutes of Health Toolbox (NIHTB) Cognition Battery, compare it with gold-standard tests, and assess its clinical utility in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The results showed that the NIHTB concords with gold-standard measures and classifies cognitive impairment at similar rates. Adjusted NIHTB fluid cognition was negatively associated with disease severity, suggesting its potential clinical relevance.

The Complex Interplay Between Trait Fatigue and Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis

Summary: Cognitive impairments are frequent in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but the influence of MS-related symptoms on cognitive status is not clear. Fatigue is the only factor that affects cognitive abilities in MS patients, and there is an association between depression and cognition.

Relationship between cognitive disturbances and sleep disorders in multiple sclerosis is modulated by psychiatric symptoms

Gianna C. Riccitelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cognitive impairment (CI) and sleep disturbances in MS patients, as well as the role of anxiety and depression in this relationship. The results suggest that low sleep efficiency, nocturnal wake time, and reduced REM sleep may affect cognitive abilities in MS patients. Higher trait anxiety appeared to impact the relationship between increased nocturnal wake time and poor memory performances. Treatment of sleep and psychiatric disturbances may contribute to mitigating cognitive disorders in MS.

Depression and cognitive function in early multiple sclerosis: Multitasking is more sensitive than traditional assessments

Lisa Glukhovsky et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive monotasking versus multitasking in early multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The results suggest that depression symptoms are more closely related to cognitive multitasking performance, with weaker impact on monotasking. Further research is needed to determine the directionality and mechanisms of this relationship for enhancing treatment strategies for cognitive dysfunction and depression in MS.

Cognitive and motor slowing mediate the relationship between depression and falls in multiple sclerosis patients.

Jenna N. Cohen et al.

Summary: This study found that fall history in MS patients is associated with higher depressive symptoms and poorer motor function. Higher self-reported depressive symptoms are linked to higher odds of falls in the past year, and cognitive and motor slowing partly mediate the relationship between depressive symptoms and fall history.

Summary: The study found that patients with MS and its subtypes exhibit impairments in core social cognitive processing, including ToM and FER, compared to healthy controls.
