Obesity and Spine Surgery: A Qualitative Review About Outcomes and Complications. Is It Time for New Perspectives on Future Researches?

Fabio Cofano et al.

Summary: This review analyzed the impact of obesity on outcomes after spine surgery, finding that although obese patients may experience more peri-operative complications, the use of MIS techniques can reduce surgical risks and improve surgical satisfaction.

The role of postoperative antibiotic duration on surgical site infection after lumbar surgery

Mohamed Macki et al.

Summary: Although patients who received postoperative antibiotics for more than 24 hours had the highest incidence of all-type surgical site infection (SSI), the duration of antibiotics did not predict the occurrence of all-type SSI. In terms of superficial SSI, neither postoperative antibiotics <= 24 hours nor postoperative antibiotics > 24 hours were associated with a decreased risk. Spine surgeons can safely consider using antibiotics for 24 hours, which is equally effective as long-term administration in preventing deep SSI.

Psoas muscle index predicts osteoporosis and fracture risk in individuals with degenerative spinal disease

Yuya Kajiki et al.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between psoas muscle index (PMI), bone mineral density, and fracture risk. PMI may help increase the accuracy of diagnosing osteoporosis and fracture risk.

Sarcopenia predicts perioperative adverse events following complex revision surgery for the thoracolumbar spine

Takashi Hirase et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia measured by psoas muscle index (PMI) is associated with higher perioperative adverse events, 30-day readmission rates, 30-day reoperation rates, rate of discharge to a facility, and longer length of stay among patients undergoing complex revision thoracolumbar spine surgery.

The effect of body mass index on blood loss and complications in simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty: A multicenter retrospective study

Guorui Cao et al.

Summary: PBV and TBL increased significantly with elevated BMI. There were no significant differences in intraoperative blood loss, drain volume, transfusion volume, length of stay, expenses, or incidence of complications among the three groups. Transfusion rate in the normal group was higher than in the overweight and obese groups.
