Summary: This study provides insights into the effectiveness of on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. The results suggest that on-demand PrEP is a valid alternative to daily PrEP in reducing HIV-1 incidence among high-risk individuals.

Socio-behavioral correlates of pre-exposure prophylaxis use and correct adherence in men who have sex with men in West Africa

August Eubanks et al.

Summary: In this study conducted in West Africa, it was found that PrEP use and correct adherence rates were relatively high among MSM participants. Community-based clinic attendance and condomless anal sex were associated with higher PrEP engagement, while socially and economically marginalized participants faced difficulties in adherence. Extra support should be provided for these vulnerable users.

Long-term protection from HIV infection with oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in gay and bisexual men: findings from the expanded and extended EPIC-NSW prospective implementation study

Andrew E. Grulich et al.

Summary: This study found that HIV incidence remained low over up to 3 years of follow-up in individuals at high risk who were prescribed PrEP. Factors associated with increased HIV incidence included being younger, living in areas with fewer gay men, reporting more risk behaviors at baseline, and having lower medication possession ratio (MPR). Overall, the study showed that with affordable PrEP and associated healthcare services, low HIV incidence rates can be maintained in high-risk populations.

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis for men who have sex with men in west Africa: a multicountry demonstration study

Christian Laurent et al.

Summary: The study on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in men who have sex with men (MSM) in West Africa showed that PrEP could effectively prevent HIV infection without increasing risky sexual behaviors or other sexually transmitted infections. Urgent implementation of PrEP in West Africa is recommended, with special attention to retention in care and PrEP adherence to ensure its full prevention potential.
