External quality assessment (EQA) and alternative assessment procedures (AAPs) in molecular diagnostics: findings of an international survey

Summary: Quality management for clinical laboratories involves establishing internal procedures, participating in external quality assessment (EQA) and alternative assessment procedures (AAPs). A global survey on EQA and AAPs in molecular diagnostic laboratories showed that the majority use laboratory-developed tests (LDTs) and participate in EQA programs, with varying levels of participation in AAPs. Results indicate a need for further clarification on existing needs for additional EQAs and standardized AAPs to improve quality practices in molecular diagnostics.
