Application of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography Macular Analysis for Systemic Hypertension. A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Rita Anjos et al.

Summary: Microvascular rarefaction of the macula is found in hypertensive patients, with a reduction of foveal and parafoveal vessel density and an increase of FAZ area in the deep capillary plexus. Worsening blood pressure control and prolonged disease duration may contribute to the reduction in vessel density.

Association Between Systolic Blood Pressure Variability and Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Korean Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: Findings From KNOW-CKD

Cheol Ho Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between visit-to-visit systolic blood pressure (SBP) variability and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with chronic kidney disease. The results showed that higher visit-to-visit SBP variability was associated with an increased risk of MACE.

Study on the Interaction between the Characteristics of Retinal Microangiopathy and Risk Factors for Cerebral Small Vessel Disease

Qian Tang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of retinal microangiopathy in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and clarify its interaction with the risk factors for CSVD. The results showed that hypertension, SBP variability, BG fluctuation, and AIP were independent vascular risk factors for CSVD. The characteristics of retinal microangiopathy were changed in patients with CSVD, including venous dilatation, decreased arteriovenous ratio, and vascular tortuosity. The characteristics of retinal microangiopathy were interactively correlated with the total imaging load and risk factors for CSVD and can be used as indicators of the severity of CSVD.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the links between blood pressure variability (BPV) and brain structures. The results showed that increased variability in systolic long-term and systolic night-time blood pressure was associated with lower brain volume and hippocampal volume.

Optical coherence tomography angiography and arterial hypertension: A role in identifying subclinical microvascular damage?

Simone Donati et al.

Summary: The study utilized optical coherence tomography angiography to evaluate retinal microvasculature changes in hypertensive patients, revealing significant differences in vascular density and choroidal thickness compared to healthy subjects. These findings highlight the potential of OCTA in identifying early pathological markers of hypertensive damage and monitoring disease progression.

Hypertension-mediated organ damage regression associates with blood pressure variability improvement three years after successful treatment initiation in essential hypertension

Helen Triantafyllidi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between short-term blood pressure variability reduction and regression of hypertension-mediated organ damage in hypertensive patients. The results showed that successful antihypertensive treatment within normal blood pressure limits could lead to cardiovascular risk reduction in both young and middle-aged patients when blood pressure was effectively controlled.

Optical coherence tomography measurements in patients with systemic hypertension

Ozlem Bursali et al.

Summary: There were significant differences between healthy individuals and patients with systemic arterial hypertension in terms of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), macula thickness, and optic nerve head (ONH) parameters, but no significant differences were found between dippers and non-dippers in terms of these measurements.
