Extreme austral winter precipitation events over the South-American Altiplano: regional atmospheric features

Hans Segura et al.

Summary: The South American Altiplano experiences extreme winter precipitation events that can last for several days. These events are associated with upper-level troughs and cold surges, as well as low-level southerly wind regimes and low-pressure systems. These precipitation events have significant impacts on the region's socio-economic activities.

The new historical flood of 2021 in the Amazon River compared to major floods of the 21st century: Atmospheric features in the context of the intensification of floods

Jhan-Carlo Espinoza et al.

Summary: A new extreme flood occurred in the Amazon Basin in June 2021, which was associated with an intensification of atmospheric upward motion in the northern Amazonia. This was related to an intensification of the Walker circulations. Additionally, there was also an intensification of the continental Hadley circulation, resulting in dry conditions in southern and southeastern Amazonia.

In a changing climate Hadley cell induces a record flood in amazon and another recorded drought across South Brazil in 2021

Vadlamudi Brahmananda Rao et al.

Summary: The Amazon region has experienced devastating floods over the past decade, causing significant loss of life and property damage. Meanwhile, there has been a significant decrease in rainfall in southeast Brazil, particularly in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais, resulting in severe droughts and reduced energy and agricultural productivity. According to the study, the recent floods in the Amazon and droughts in southeast Brazil, especially the extreme events in 2021, are strongly associated with changes in the Hadley cell.

Evaluation of multiple reanalyses in reproducing the spatio-temporal variability of temperature and precipitation indices over southern South America

Rocio Balmaceda-Huarte et al.

Summary: Multiple temperature and precipitation indices were analyzed in different sub-regions of southern South America from 1979 to 2017, focusing on extremes. The reanalyses generally represented spatial patterns well, but showed differences in extreme indices and tended to overestimate precipitation in certain areas. Long-term changes showed warming conditions, but reanalyses had varying temporal changes in temperature indices.

Anticipation Mechanism for Cold Wave: Forecast Based Financing a Case Study in the Peruvian Andes

Juan Bazo et al.

Summary: In June 2018, heavy snowfall in the southern Andean region of Peru caused severe damage to communities. The Peruvian Red Cross implemented a pre-defined protocol two days before the extreme snowfall, providing support to 10 prioritized communities. The results showed that these communities experienced fewer losses compared to those who did not receive early support.

The friagem event in the central Amazon and its influence on micrometeorological variables and atmospheric chemistry

Guilherme F. Camarinha-Neto et al.

Summary: Between 9 and 11 July 2014, a friagem event hit the Amazon region, bringing a sudden temperature drop and increased precipitation. The convergence of warm and cold air masses triggered convective activity, resulting in significant changes in surface gas mixing ratios.
