Topologically protected magnetoelectric switching in a multiferroic

Louis Ponet et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a method to reverse the electric polarization of multiferroic materials by applying and removing a magnetic field, which requires two cycles to bring the system back to its original configuration. During this process, the system visits four states with different magnetic configurations, with half of the spins undergoing unidirectional full-circle rotation in increments of about 90 degrees. Therefore, this material exhibits a peculiar magnetoelectric switching behavior that converts the variations of the magnetic field into circular spin motion.

Magnetoelectric phase diagram and magnetic field-induced reversal of electric polarization in Ba0.5Sr1.5Mg1.6Co0.4Fe12O22 single crystal

Chuankun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of multiferroic Y-type hexaferrite Ba0.5Sr1.5Mg1.6Co0.4Fe12O22 single crystal, revealing the importance of magnetic field direction on spin configurations and the non-zero polarization at zero magnetic field below 50 K. The magnetoelectric phase diagram showed the evolution of spin-induced ferroelectric order with magnetic field and temperature, indicating a field-induced ferroelectric order maintained in zero magnetic field below 150 K.
