Summary: In this research, we explore the limits of pulse duration in a Kerr-lens modelocked Yb:YAG thin-disk laser (TDL) oscillator. By optimizing various mode-locking parameters, we achieve the shortest pulse duration directly generated by any ultrafast TDL oscillator operating in the strongly self-phase modulation broadened regime. Our results provide insights into trade-offs in average power, pulse duration, efficiency, and intra-cavity peak power for ultrafast TDL oscillators.

Summary: A diode-pumped Kerr-lens mode-locked laser using a novel mixed crystal as the gain medium has generated nearly Fourier-limited pulses with high average power and pulse repetition rate, achieving a record-high optical-to-optical efficiency for any Yb-doped borate crystal. Non-phase-matched self-frequency doubling was observed, showing strong spectral fringes originating from delayed green replicas of the fundamental femtosecond pulses in the time domain.
