Research and development of advanced structured packing in a rotating packed bed

Zhi-Guo Yuan et al.

Summary: A 3D structured packing composed of mesh and support structures was designed in this study to achieve efficient gas-liquid mixing and mass transfer. Experimental results showed that the mass transfer performance of the 3D packing was equivalent to that of wire mesh packing and better than that of pall ring packing. The pressure drop of the 3D packing was significantly lower compared to the other two packings.

Effect of turbulence dispersion on bubble-particle collision efficiency

Ai Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the bubble-particle collision efficiency in a single-bubble system was investigated for different turbulence intensities and particle sizes. An analytical model was proposed to quantify the turbulence collision efficiency and compared with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. It was found that the collision efficiency and effective particle releasing radius increased with turbulence intensity and particle diameter. The CFD model showed that higher turbulence intensity resulted in increased energy dissipation rate and more stochastic particle trajectories.

Particulate flow and erosion modeling of a Pelton turbine injector using CFD-DEM simulations

Rahul Tarodiya et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the hydro-abrasive erosion of the Pelton turbine injector in sediment-laden water. Computational fluid dynamics coupled with discrete element method simulations were used to model the sediment-laden flows, considering particle rotation and collisions. A semi-empirical erosion model was developed to predict the erosion of the injector, which was calibrated with experimental data for turbine steel. The results showed that the erosion of the injector was asymmetric, and the variation in particle size played a major role in the erosion distribution. The nozzle opening conditions had a significant impact on the erosion distribution and the location of maximum erosion on the spear.

Analysis of a more sustainable method for recycling waste lead batteries: Surface renewal promotes desulfurization agent regeneration

Yang Ma et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new closed-loop pre-desulfurization process for waste lead-acid batteries, using lime as the desulfurizer to produce sodium sulfate and regenerate sodium hydroxide. Cost analysis shows that this process is more cost-effective than traditional methods, providing a practical and economically beneficial recycling method for waste lead-acid batteries.

Enhancement of flocculant-aided filtration performance of coal tailings under alternating low and high shear rates

Zhimin Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the effect of alternate shear conditions on the flocculant-aided filtration performance of coal tailings. They found that sequenced flocculation produced stronger flocs compared to single shear conditions. The flocs formed under two cycles of high and low shear rates were the strongest and contained fewer particles and small flocs. Filtration experiments showed that the coal tailings had the best comprehensive filtration performance under the sequenced flocculation with two cycles of high and low shear rates. The filtration outcomes were consistent with the measurements given by FBRM and PVM.

Design and development of high shear mixers: Fundamentals, applications and recent progress

Vikash Vashisth et al.

Summary: HSMs, as important devices, are widely used in industrial production processes such as dispersion of nanoparticles, emulsification, and mixing. The geometry of the stator has a significant impact on the uniform size distribution and energy dissipation in HSMs. Despite extensive research on hydrodynamics and mixing in HSMs, there is still a lack of specific scale-up/down criteria available.
