Complexation between uranyl(VI) and CMPO in a hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid: An extraction, spectrophotography, and calorimetry study

Baihua Chen et al.

Summary: The extraction complexes of uranyl(VI) in HNO3 to a hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid (IL) phase, HOEtmimNTf(2) bearing CMPO, were studied. Three successive extraction complexes, UO2L2+, UO2L22+ and UO2L32+, were detected based on varying U/L ratios. The thermodynamics of these complexes were investigated and the formation reactions were found to be primarily driven by entropy. The coordination mode of the complexes in the IL was proposed. These findings provide valuable thermodynamic insights into the formation behaviors of the uranyl(VI)/CMPO complexes and contribute to the advancement of novel IL extraction strategies.

Efficient separation between trivalent americium and lanthanides enabled by a phenanthroline-based polymeric organic framework

Afshin Khayambashi et al.

Summary: The separation of minor actinides and lanthanides from high-level liquid wastes is a challenging task. This study presents the design of a phenanthroline-based polymeric organic framework (PhenTAPB-POF) for the separation of trivalent americium from lanthanides. The PhenTAPB-POF exhibits excellent stability and selectivity under extreme conditions, making it a promising alternative for the separation of minor actinides over lanthanides.

Hydrophilic Sulfonated 2,9-Diamide-1,10-phenanthroline Endowed with a Highly Effective Ligand for Separation of Americium(III) from Europium(III): Extraction, Spectroscopy, and Density Functional Theory Calculations

Peng Ren et al.

Summary: A novel hydrophilic multidentate ligand, DS-Ph-DAPhen, was designed and synthesized for the separation of Am(III) from Eu(III) with high selectivity in aqueous solutions. Coordination behaviors of Eu(III) with DS-Ph-DAPhen were studied, revealing the formation of both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes. Density functional theory calculations suggest better selectivity of the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand towards Am(III) over Eu(III) due to more covalent characters in the Am-N bonds. This work demonstrates a feasible alternative approach to separating trivalent actinides from lanthanides with high selectivity.

Strong Periodic Tendency of Trivalent Lanthanides Coordinated with a Phenanthroline-Based Ligand: Cascade Countercurrent Extraction, Spectroscopy, and Crystallography

Xiao-Fan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the coordination performance of lanthanides in simulative high-level liquid waste using Et-Tol-DAPhen as the extractant was explored for the first time through cascade countercurrent extraction. The results revealed a periodic tendency of lanthanides extraction efficiency decreasing as the atomic number increases. Slope analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and ultraviolet-visible titration confirmed that the coordination ability of the ligand follows the tendency of extraction efficiency. The first crystal structures of Ln(III) with a phenanthroline-diamide ligand were obtained, supporting the conclusions drawn from the study.
