Sustainable Design of Structural and Functional Polymers for a Circular Economy

Bernhard von Vacano et al.

Summary: To achieve a sustainable circular economy of polymers, the production of polymers must transition to recycled and biobased feedstock and achieve CO2 emission neutrality. Collecting and recycling polymers or utilizing biodegradable options at their end of life is crucial. Advances in polymer chemistry and applications, supported by computational material science, offer opportunities for designing polymers with recyclability and biodegradability. This Review explores the pathways for transforming the polymer industry towards a circular economy, taking into account scientific progress, regulatory frameworks, societal expectations, and economic factors.

Biodegradable High-Density Polyethylene-like Material

Marcel Eck et al.

Summary: We have developed a new polyester material using biobased 1,18-octadecanedicarboxylic acid and ethylene glycol, which has a solid-state structure similar to polyethylene and comparable tensile properties to high density polyethylene (HDPE). Despite its crystallinity, high melting point and hydrophobic nature, the polyester-2,18 can be rapidly and completely hydrolytically degraded in vitro by naturally occurring enzymes. It also shows high biodegradability under industrial composting conditions and can be depolymerized by methanolysis for closed-loop recycling.

Catalytic Decomposition of Long-Chain Olefins to Propylene via Isomerization-Metathesis Using Latent Bicyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Carbene-Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

Marton Nagyhazi et al.

Summary: This paper reports on novel catalysts that can catalytically degrade long-chain olefins in non-biodegradable polymers into propylene. These catalysts show higher selectivity to propylene at lower reaction temperatures. The use of isomerization co-catalyst enables the conversion of long-chain olefins to propylene. The catalysts exhibit high turnover number and turnover frequency.
