Azobispyrazole Family as Photoswitches Combining (Near-) Quantitative Bidirectional Isomerization and Widely Tunable Thermal Half-Lives from Hours to Years**

Yixin He et al.

Summary: Azobispyrazoles are a new family of molecular photoswitches with (near-)quantitative bidirectional photoconversion and widely tunable Z-isomer thermal half-lives. The two five-membered rings in their structure weaken intramolecular steric hindrance, providing new possibilities for engineering the geometric and electronic structure of azo photoswitches. Their twisted Z-isomers allow for complete Z -> E photoisomerization, and their thermal stability can be adjusted broadly, overcoming the conflict between photoconversion and Z-isomer stability encountered by mono-heteroaryl azo switches.

Utilisation of photo-thermal energy and bond enthalpy based on optically triggered formation and dissociation of coordination bonds

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The closed cycle utilisation of photo-thermal energy faces two main challenges: increasing the ability of energy storage and controlling the heat output. A novel reversible dynamic bond was introduced into a nano graphene-templated azobenzene (G-Azo) hybrid, resulting in a maximum energy density of 720.1 kJ kg-1 and the reversible utilization of photo-thermal energy and bond enthalpy in solid state.

Zhihang Wang et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of a photoswitchable molecules-based solar thermal energy storage system (MOST) and uses a multijunction device combining various photoswitches to push the efficiency limit on solar energy collection and storage. Experimental demonstration of a three-layered MOST device with different photoswitches in liquid state shows the feasibility of increasing energy capture and storage behavior by tailoring molecules. This conceptual device introduces a new approach to optimize molecular candidates for MOST, showing that significant improvements can be made by efficiently storing solar energy at specific wavelengths.

Sunlight-activated phase change materials for controlled heat storage and triggered release†

Yuran Shi et al.

Summary: This study presents a photo-responsive organic phase change material that can store both latent heat and photon energy by absorbing filtered solar radiation. The activation of photo-switches by long wavelengths in the absence of high-intensity light sources is achieved by ortho-substitution of azobenzene units. The liquid phase activated by sunlight shows long heat storage without crystallization for nearly two months, with energy release triggered by short irradiation at a specific wavelength.
