Flexible and free-standing electrode for high-performance vanadium redox flow battery: Bamboo-like carbon fiber skeleton from textile fabric

Rajesh Madhu et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared carbon cloth electrodes with high flexibility and free-standing properties using cotton fabric and achieved improved electrochemical performance by nitrogen doping. The electrodes showed higher electrochemical activity towards vanadium ions compared to carbon felt and commercial graphite felt in a three-electrode electrochemical cell. In a full cell configuration, vanadium redox flow batteries constructed with these electrodes achieved increased energy efficiency, voltage efficiency, and columbic efficiency at different current densities. The cotton-based electrodes provide a unique opportunity for the commercialization of low-cost, metal-free vanadium redox flow batteries.

Tailoring the Structure of Chitosan-Based Porous Carbon Nanofiber Architectures toward Efficient Capacitive Charge Storage and Capacitive Deionization

Laszlo Szabo et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the relationship between the structure and electrochemical performance of porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) derived from the biobased building block chitosan. The researchers found that by varying the amount and molecular weight of the sacrificial pore-forming polymer, they could tailor the structure of the PCNFs to have a high surface area and hierarchical pore network, resulting in fast ion diffusion, high specific capacitance, and rate capability. The chitosan-based materials demonstrated high stability and charge efficiency, making them promising for use in charge storage devices.
