Photo-assisted Fe2+ modified molybdenum disulfide activated potassium persulfate to degrade sulfadiazine: Insights into the degradation pathway and mechanism from density functional theory

Yangchen Zhu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explored the degradation mechanism of sulfadiazine (SDZ) by MoS2 photocatalysis and Fe2+ activation of potassium peroxodisulfate (PDS) from both theoretical and experimental aspects. The PDS/Fe2+/MoS2 system exhibited a faster PDS conversion rate and higher degradation efficiency for SDZ compared to the PDS/Fe2+ and PDS/MoS2 systems. The degradation rate of SDZ in the PDS/Fe2+/MoS2 system reached 97.1% within 60 minutes. MoS2 promoted the cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+ and the conversion of PDS, contributing to the enhanced performance of the system.

Comparative Experimental and Computational Studies of Hydroxyl and Sulfate Radical-Mediated Degradation of Simple and Complex Organic Substrates

Yufan Chen et al.

Summary: This study compares the effectiveness of PS/Fe(II) and H2O2/Fe(II) processes in the degradation of formate and the removal of contaminants in nanofiltration concentrate. The results show that PS/Fe(II) has slower Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling due to the scavenging of superoxide by PS, resulting in lower mineralization rates. However, PS/Fe(II) provides sustained removal of total organic carbon (TOC) and exhibits better performance in transforming humic-like compounds. The application of PS/Fe(II) is limited by the slow oxidation of organic contaminants, release of sulfate, and formation of chlorinated byproducts.
