Co-catalytic effect of WS2 on the copper slag mediated peroxodisulfate activation for the simultaneous elimination of typical flotation reagent benzotriazole and Cr(VI)

Bo Ma et al.

Summary: A copper slag activated peroxodisulfate Fenton system, with WS2 as a co-catalyst, was used for efficient simultaneous removal of typical mine pollutants BTA and Cr(VI). The combination of copper slag and WS2 enabled excellent pollution removal efficiency. The process involved surface reactions on WS2 for Fe3+/Fe2+ conversion, and homogeneous Fenton reactions for PDS decomposition and BTA degradation. Fe(IV) was identified as the major ROS responsible for BTA degradation in the CS/WS2/PDS system. This study provides a cost-effective and efficient strategy for decontamination in mining areas.

Mechanisms for hydroxyl radical production and arsenic removal in sulfur-vacancy greigite (Fe3S4)

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanisms of OH production and As(III) oxidation induced by Fe3S4 with sulfur vacancies were systematically investigated under anoxic and oxic conditions. It was found that sulfur vacancy-rich Fe3S4 produced more OH compared to sulfur vacancy-poor Fe3S4, and the OH produced under oxic conditions facilitated the immobilization of As(V). These findings provide new insights into the role of surface defects on Fe3S4 in OH production and environmental pollutants removal.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by different iron sulfides for bisphenol-A degradation: Performance and mechanism

Xiwen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of iron sulfide crystals on the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient bisphenol-A (BPA) degradation. The results show that Fe3S4 exhibits higher catalytic activity compared to FeS2 and Fe7S8, and the lattice sulfur in the iron sulfide crystals possesses electron donating capacity.

A comparative study of activation of peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate by greigite (Fe3S4) for the degradation of sulfamethazine in water

Shuxue Xiang et al.

Summary: In this study, greigite (Fe3S4) was used as a catalyst to degrade sulfamethoazine (SMT) in water using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) as activators. Factors such as oxidant concentration, sulfur sources, iron sources, and pH were investigated. The results showed that SMT could be completely removed in the Fe3S4/PMS system at a concentration of 0.1 mM within 15 minutes, and 96.7% of SMT could be removed in the Fe3S4/PDS system at a concentration of 1.0 mM within 60 minutes. The study also evaluated the degradation intermediates of SMT and their practical application in both systems.

New insight into the mechanism of peroxymonosulfate activation by Fe3S4: Radical and non-radical oxidation

Jun Li et al.

Summary: The degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) through the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by flower-like Fe3S4 was investigated. The flower-like Fe3S4 showed the best performance with the highest reaction stoichiometric efficiency. Non-radical singlet oxygen was found to participate in the catalytic oxidation of compounds in addition to the typical sulfate radical and hydroxyl radical.

Xiaoguo Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, FeS2 nanoparticles were synthesized using a wet ball milling method and subsequent heat-treatment. The synthesized FeS2 Fenton system exhibited superior degradation ability for sulfadiazine at a wide pH range. The results suggested that the dominating degradation mechanism was the homogeneous Fenton reaction.

Facet-controlled activation of persulfate by magnetite nanoparticles for the degradation of tetracycline

Leixin Hu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the catalytic performance of three types of magnetite nanoparticles with different exposed crystal facets for tetracycline degradation. The results showed that MNPs with {111} facet exhibited superior catalytic activity compared to {1 1 0} and {1 0 0} facets. The catalytic performance was determined by hydroxide, physically adsorbed H2O, and transformations of Fe(II)/Fe(III) on the MNPs{111} surface, with XPS analysis supporting the findings.
