Flame retardant back-coated PET fabric with DOPO-based environmentally friendly formulations

Merve S. Oezer et al.

Summary: There is a high demand for nontoxic flame retardants in the textile industry to replace harmful alternatives. However, eco-friendly phosphorus-based flame retardants for synthetic textiles are scarce, especially for back coating application. In this study, non-toxic phosphorus flame retardants (such as EDA-DOPO and DOPO-PEPA) were applied to PET fabric via a back coating process using different polymer resins. The fabrics' flame retardant performance was evaluated using the vertical burning test, and it was found that DOPO-based FR compounds were effective, but the addition of melamine was necessary to improve the performance of DOPO-PEPA formulations.
