Revelation of high-adsorption-performance activated carbon for removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from water

Jan Bednarek et al.

Summary: The preparation of carbonaceous sorbents using waste material is an effective way to improve water quality. In this study, activated carbons were prepared from different agricultural waste biomasses and tested for the adsorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The results showed that activated carbon based on red mombin seeds exhibited the best adsorption performance. It was also found that high micropore volume and net pore volume were the key factors determining the adsorption performance for the removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from water.

Distribution of antibiotics in water, sediments and biofilm in an urban river (Cordoba, Argentina, LA)

M. Eugenia Valdes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the distribution of antibiotics and metabolite residues in an urban river, revealing the downstream sites as the most polluted due to wastewater treatment plant discharge, with biofilms showing higher accumulation of antibiotics compared to sediments. The presence of specific antibiotics in water poses a high risk for aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of managing identified high-risk antibiotics by government authorities.

Magnetic iron nanoparticles calcined from biosynthesis for fluoroquinolone antibiotic removal from wastewater

Xiulan Weng et al.

Summary: Efficient removal methods for fluoroquinolone antibiotics are urgently needed due to their significant global ecosystem disturbances. In this study, calcined magnetic iron nanoparticles were successfully used to remove ofloxacin and pefloxacin from aqueous solution with a high adsorption efficiency of 100%. The adsorption mechanisms may involve pore-filling, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction.
