Nitrogen and phosphorus spatio-temporal distribution and fluxes intensifying eutrophication in three tropical rivers of Co circumflex accent te d'Ivoire (West Africa)

Maley-Pacome Soro et al.

Summary: This study conducted nutrient contamination assessments in three West African rivers, Comoe, Bandama, and Bia, in Cote d'Ivoire from 2016 to 2018. The results showed that nitrogen concentrations significantly increased with rainfall, while phosphorus concentrations remained stable. The rivers were found to be hypereutrophic, with nitrogen being the main limiting factor during low and high flow periods, and phosphorus being the limiting factor at the beginning of high flow. Land uses around the rivers were identified as the main sources of phosphorus and nitrogen, contributing to the rivers' eutrophication and nutrient fluxes to the Atlantic Ocean.

Eutrophication induces functional homogenization and traits filtering in Chinese lacustrine fish communities

Kai Feng et al.

Summary: Rapid anthropogenic nutrient enrichment has caused widespread ecological problems in aquatic ecosystems and has dramatically changed fish communities worldwide. However, little research has investigated how these communities respond to eutrophication in terms of functional and taxonomic structure. This study examined the effects of eutrophication on fish species composition, community metrics, and functional traits in 26 shallow lakes in the Yangtze River basin. The results showed that eutrophication plays a significant role in shaping fish community structure, favoring higher biomass and lower functional diversity, while having little impact on species richness. The study highlights the importance of considering specific evolutionary histories when studying the relationships between functional traits and eutrophication.

Phosphorous removal and recovery from urban wastewater: Current practices and new directions

Francesco Di Capua et al.

Summary: Phosphate rocks are essential for fertilizer production, but their availability is insufficient to meet agricultural demands. Wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in phosphorus management by removing and recovering phosphorus, reducing eutrophication and meeting fertilizer demands. Recent studies have focused on improving phosphorus removal efficiency and reducing treatment costs through advancements in biological and material sciences. The development of processes for phosphorus recovery from wastewater and sludge has also been explored. This review provides updated information for the design and upgrading of wastewater treatment plants in anticipation of forthcoming regulations on phosphorus removal and recovery.

Simultaneous removal of iron, manganese, and ammonia enhanced by preloaded MnO2 on low-pressure ultrafiltration membrane

Xuesong Ye et al.

Summary: This study systematically compared the performance of pristine and MnO2-preloaded ultrafiltration membranes in removing ferrous iron, manganese, and ammonia from source water. The results showed that the MnO2-preloaded membrane not only allowed higher water flux but also exhibited better removal efficiency for these contaminants. Additionally, higher ammonia concentration resulted in a thicker bio-cake layer, leading to higher pollutant removal efficiency and a decrease in stable flux.

Response of different benthic biotic indices to eutrophication and sediment heavy metal pollution, in fujian coastal water, East China sea

Hai-Yan Wu et al.

Summary: The types and intensity of anthropogenic pressure may vary in the same sea area and change over time. The response of benthic biotic indices to different pressure is different, making it unreasonable to use the same indices in a large sea area. This study analyzed the response of five benthic biotic indices to eutrophication and sediment heavy metal pollution in six bays in the Fujian coastal water, and proposed selecting suitable indices based on the pressure types. The study provides insights into rapidly selecting indices to evaluate the coastal benthic ecological quality status.
