Lifetime exposure to benzophenone-3 at an environmentally relevant concentration leads to female-biased social behavior and cognition deficits in zebrafish

Summary: This study evaluated the neurotoxicity of lifetime exposure to an environmentally relevant concentration of BP3 in zebrafish. The results showed that continuous BP3 exposure led to female-biased social behavioral deficits and learning and memory impairment. These effects were accompanied by changes in brain weight, dopamine concentration, neurogenesis, apoptotic cells, and expression of genes and proteins related to the apoptosis pathway.

The association of prenatal exposure to benzophenones with gestational age and offspring size at birth

However, the clinical significance of these findings is limited, and better methods for characterizing BP-3 exposure are needed.

Benzoresorcinol induces developmental neurotoxicity and injures exploratory, learning and memorizing abilities in zebrafish

Summary: This study investigated the neurodevelopmental and neurotoxic effects of benzophenone 1 (BP1) using the zebrafish model. The results showed that BP1 increased embryo mortality, decreased hatching rate, and induced developmental abnormalities in a concentration-dependent manner. BP1 also caused defects in the central nervous system and dopaminergic neurons. In larval zebrafish, BP1 impaired general locomotion and response to light/dark stimuli. In adult zebrafish, BP1 exposure inhibited learning and memory abilities and reduced exploratory behavior and activity. Analysis of gene transcription levels suggested that BP1 may affect the development and function of the myelin sheath, leading to structural and functional defects in the central nervous system and abnormal behaviors such as anxiety. This study reveals the neurodevelopmental toxicity and neurotoxicity of BP1, highlighting its potential threat to the environment and human health.
