Retention of deposited ammonium and nitrate and its impact on the global forest carbon sink

Geshere Abdisa Gurmesa et al.

Summary: The impacts of enhanced nitrogen deposition on the forest carbon sink and other ecosystem services depend on the form of nitrogen deposition and its subsequent fate. This study found that both ammonium and nitrate were retained in the forest ecosystem, but plants took up more nitrate while soils retained more ammonium. The estimated forest carbon sink induced by nitrogen deposition is higher than previous estimates due to the larger role of oxidized nitrogen and increased global nitrogen deposition rates.

Nitrate sources and formation in aerosol and precipitation in a tropical city in South China: Insight from nitrate dual isotopes

Huijie Luo et al.

Summary: This study measured nitrate dual isotopes and concentrations in aerosol and precipitation in Zhanjiang, China, to investigate the formation processes, sources, and differences of nitrate dual isotopes in a tropical area. The results showed seasonal variation and different sources of nitrate in aerosol and precipitation. The OH radical pathway was found to be the dominant pathway for atmospheric nitrate production in this tropical city. The differences in nitrate dual isotopes between aerosol and precipitation were attributed to precipitation frequency and peroxy radicals. The main atmospheric nitrate sources in Zhanjiang were vehicle emissions, lightning, and biomass burning.

Regime shift in aerosol ammonium between the rainy and dry season: Perspective from stable isotopes in bulk deposition

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: This study measured the concentration and stable nitrogen isotope of NH4+ in Zhanjiang to understand the relations between rainwater-NH4+ and aerosol-NH4+ and identify NH3 sources. The results showed that air temperature was the dominant regulator in the dry season, whereas rainfall was the dominant factor in the rainy season. The major sources of NH3 were volatilization of livestock waste and fertilizer.

Chemical characterization and stable nitrogen isotope composition of nitrogenous component of ambient aerosols from Kanpur in the Indo-Gangetic Plains

Gyanesh Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Measurements of nitrogenous species in winter PM2.5 aerosol samples were conducted in a heavily polluted area in Kanpur, north India. Results showed NH₄⁺_N and WSON dominated WSTN, with stagnant atmospheric conditions enhancing concentrations of ionic species. Isotopic analysis indicated likely sources of nitrogen emissions in the area to be agriculture activities and waste generation.

High NH3 deposition in the environs of a commercial fattening pig farm in central south China

Wuying Yi et al.

Summary: Intensive livestock production in China has led to significant NH3 emissions, with high levels of NH3 deposition observed around intensive pig farms. Seasonal variations show higher deposition in summer and lower in winter, with air temperature playing a key role in this seasonal trend. NH3 deposition accounts for 4.1%-14% of NH3 emissions within 500 meters of the pig farm, with an annual average NH3 deposition to emission ratio of 8.6%.

Isotopic source analysis of nitrogen-containing aerosol: A study of PM2.5 in Guiyang (SW, China)

Jing Tian et al.

Summary: The study in Guiyang, China revealed that biomass burning is the main contributor to PM2.5, with major water-soluble inorganic ions being dominated by NH4+. In winter, NO3- becomes the major nitrogen contributor, with emissions from coal combustion, vehicle exhaust, and biomass burning identified as the key sources.

Variations in characteristics and transport pathways of PM2.5 during heavy pollution episodes in 2013-2019 in Jinan, a central city in the north China Plain

Gang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the number of heavy pollution episodes (HPEs) decreased from 2013 to 2017 and then increased from 2017 to 2019, mainly due to emission reductions and meteorological conditions. The PM2.5 concentrations during HPEs in 2019 decreased compared to those in 2013, with longer duration HPEs having higher PM2.5 concentrations.

The canopy layer, a biogeochemical actor in the forest N-cycle

Anna Bortolazzi et al.

Summary: "Studies have shown that a portion of both wet and dry N deposition can be retained within the canopy, absorbed by leaves or other aerial parts, and utilized for plant metabolism, significantly altering the fate of N in the ecosystem. The canopy-associated biota play an active role in various processes of the N cycle, such as nitrification, fixation, and volatilization."
