Spatial variation in dissolved phosphorus and interactions with arsenic in response to changing redox conditions in floodplain aquifers of the Hetao Basin, Inner Mongolia

Yao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cycling of phosphorous and its interactions with arsenic in groundwater under changing redox conditions. The results show that redox conditions greatly influence the mobilization and immobilization of phosphorous and arsenic, and the presence of certain minerals plays a crucial role in their behavior.

Carbon and iron isotope approach elucidates the enrichment of geogenic phosphorus in alluvial-lacustrine sedimentary aquifers

Yanqiu Tao et al.

Summary: This study explores the mechanisms of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides and organic matter (OM) in controlling the mobilization of phosphorus (P) in the alluvial-lacustrine aquifers at the Dongting Plain (DTP) in central China. Using isotopes and groundwater geochemistry, the study finds that prolonged water-rock interactions in reducing environments lead to high concentrations of geogenic P. The reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides and the mineralization of organic P contribute to these high P concentrations.

Geochemical factors controlling natural background levels of phosphate in various groundwater units in a large-scale urbanized area

Pan Bi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the natural background levels (NBLs) of phosphate in different groundwater units in the Pearl River Delta and discussed the main geochemical processes controlling the origin of high levels of phosphate. The results showed that the NBL of phosphate in the coastal-alluvial aquifer was significantly higher than in other groundwater units, mainly due to the release of phosphate, bicarbonate, and Fe(II) caused by mineralization of organic matter and reductive dissolution of Fe(III)-(hydr) oxides.

Source identification of groundwater phosphorus under different geological settings in the central Yangtze River basin

Jun Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sources and enrichment of phosphorus (P) in groundwater in three different areas of the central Yangtze River basin. The results showed that the sources of groundwater P varied depending on the geological conditions. The study highlights the importance of considering regional geology when studying P sources and enrichment in groundwater systems.

Novel Insights into Dissolved Organic Matter Processing Pathways in a Coastal Confined Aquifer System with the Highest Known Concentration of Geogenic Ammonium

Yao Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms underlying the high geogenic ammonium levels in the coastal confined aquifer system of the Pearl River Delta by characterizing DOM optical and molecular signatures, as well as multiple isotopes. The processing pathway of DOM components and the gradual enrichment of ammonium due to decomposition were identified, leading to the retention of produced ammonium in the aquifer. The contrasting DOM characteristics and differing hydrogeological conditions contribute to the higher geogenic ammonium levels in coastal aquifer systems compared to inland systems.

Submarine groundwater discharge impacts on coastal nutrient biogeochemistry

Isaac R. Santos et al.

Summary: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) plays a significant role in connecting terrestrial and marine systems by releasing nutrients into coastal waters. SGD-derived nitrogen inputs can alleviate nitrogen limitation in coastal ecosystems. Saline SGD is a widespread source of recycled nutrients to global coastal waters, while fresh SGD acts as a localized point source of new nutrients.
