The allelopathy and underlying mechanism of Skeletonema costatum on Karenia mikimotoi integrating transcriptomics profiling

Xin Guo et al.

Summary: The allelopathic effects of Skeletonema costatum on Karenia mikimotoi were found to inhibit the growth of K. mikimotoi, with the degree of inhibition dependent on the dosage. K. mikimotoi was able to adapt quickly to stress and scavenge excessive ROS, with oxidative damage not being the main cause of growth inhibition. The allelopathy of S. costatum influenced the cell membrane structure of K. mikimotoi, leading to cell necrosis and high mortality, suggesting a detrimental impact on the development of competitive algal populations.

Allelopathic inhibitory effect on the growth of microcystis aeruginosa by improved ultrasonic-cellulase extract of Vallisneria

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: The unique and efficient characteristics of allelopathy in submerged plants make it an environmentally friendly method to control harmful algal blooms. This study analyzed the growth inhibition effect of Vallisneria extract on Microcystis aeruginosa cells using enzyme and ultrasonic-assisted extraction method. The results showed that the Vallisneria ultrasonic-cellulase extract could induce oxidative stress in Microcystis aeruginosa cells and had a significant inhibitory effect on its growth.

Time- and dose-dependent allelopathic effects and mechanisms of kaempferol on toxigenic Microcystis growth

Jieming Li et al.

Summary: This study confirmed 3.5 mg/L as the IC50 value for kaempferol inhibiting toxigenic Microcystis growth and explored the algicidal effects and mechanisms against Microcystis exposed to various kaempferol doses. Results showed that growth inhibition ratio increased with kaempferol dose, with various physiological parameters showing different trends. Overall, kaempferol exhibited good algicidal effects against Microcystis.

Cyanobacterial dominance and succession: Factors, mechanisms, predictions, and managements

Zeshuang Wang et al.

Summary: Eutrophication of natural water bodies globally has led to cyanobacteria becoming dominant in phytoplankton communities, causing significant environmental and economic harm. Cyanobacterial succession poses challenges for effective bloom treatment, with current studies lacking a comprehensive review of advances in this field. Future management strategies for controlling cyanobacterial blooms may involve reducing nutrient inputs, artificial mixing of waters, and biological control methods.

Mechanisms for the stimulatory effects of a five-component mixture of antibiotics in Microcystis aeruginosa at transcriptomic and proteomic levels

Yunhan Jiang et al.

Summary: Mixed antibiotics can stimulate the growth and microcystin synthesis of Microcystis aeruginosa by activating photosynthesis, carbon metabolism, and other pathways to enhance resistance to oxidative stress. This study provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the hormetic stimulation of harmful cyanobacterial blooms by antibiotic contaminants.

Allelopathic Efficiency of Plant Extracts to Control Cyanobacteria in Hydroponic Culture

Chan Saem Gil et al.

Summary: The study found that walnut husk and rose leaf extracts were effective in controlling Microcystis aeruginosa, mainly due to their high levels of water-soluble tannins. Although not completely eradicating algae, these extracts showed persistent control effects, especially rose leaf extract which was less toxic to plant growth compared to walnut husk extract.

Allelopathic effects and potential allelochemical of Sargassum fusiforme on red tide microalgae Heterosigma akashiwo

Siqi Sun et al.

Summary: This study identified and isolated six potential allelopathic substances from marine brown algae Sargassum fusiforme, including ALA and 24-hydroperoxy-24-vinylcholesterol, which showed significant inhibitory effects on the growth of Heterosigma akashiwo. The research also investigated the allelopathic mechanism between ALA and H. akashiwo, revealing a gradual decrease in SOD and POD activities and a reduction in photosynthetic pigments with increasing ALA concentration, suggesting the potential of macroalgae in red tide control.
