Development of Geometry-Controlled All-Orthogonal BODIPY Trimers for Photodynamic Therapy and Phototheragnosis

Alejandro Prieto-Castaneda et al.

Summary: We have established an easy synthetic protocol for selectively developing all-orthogonal BODIPY trimers with unprecedented geometries. The trimer has been shown to serve as a molecular platform for the development of new, advanced heavy-atom-free photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy and phototheragnosis.

Synthesis and investigation of a hexyl substituted thieno-fused BODIPY derivative as a versatile near-IR fluorophore

Yusuf Cakmak

Summary: This work reports the synthesis, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of hexyl thiophene substituted thieno[b]-fused BODIPY structure. One of the derivatives, HTFBod, is a rare compound with a maximum absorbance wavelength greater than 750 nm among fused BODIPY compounds while maintaining high molar absorptivity and fluorescence quantum yield. The compound shows potential as a donor compound for organic solar cells due to its low band gap and ability to harvest near-IR light, as well as its air stability and solubility.

A leucine aminopeptidase activatable photosensitizer for cancer cell selective photodynamic therapy action

Busra Arslan et al.

Summary: Activity based photosensitizers are gaining attention for their selective action on cancer cells under light irradiation. A novel activatable PDT agent HCL was reported, selectively activated by the LAP enzyme in cancer cells with high LAP levels, showing effective photocytotoxicity with minimal dark toxicity. HCL could serve as an effective and tumor-associated LAP-sensitive phototheranostic agent.

Exploration of Two Different Strategies in Near IR Absorbing Boron Dipyrromethene Derivatives for Photodynamic and Bioimaging Purposes

Busra Can et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and photophysical investigations of two different near IR absorbing classes of Boron dipyrromethene (Bodipy) photosensitizers for use in Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and fluorescent bioimaging purposes. The benzofused Bodipy derivative was found to be an effective PDT agent, while the unique distyryl derivative showed better singlet oxygen generation ability.

Design of BODIPY dyes as triplet photosensitizers: electronic properties tailored for solar energy conversion, photoredox catalysis and photodynamic therapy

Elena Bassan et al.

Summary: BODIPY dyes can be turned into efficient triplet photosensitizers with strong absorption in the visible region through proper design strategies such as halogenation of the dye skeleton, donor-acceptor dyads, and BODIPY dimers. These design strategies offer numerous advantages in terms of optical and electrochemical properties, with potential applications ranging from energy conversion to medicine.
