,r-Extended Rubrenes via Dearomative Annulative ,r-Extension Reaction

Wataru Matsuoka et al.

Summary: In this study, we successfully achieved a late-stage pi-extension of rubrene using dearomative annulative pi-extension (DAPEX), leading to the generation of rubrene derivatives with an extended aromatic core. These pi-extended rubrenes displayed a marked red shift in absorption and emission spectra, indicating the extension of the rubrene's aromatic pi-system both structurally and electronically. Furthermore, organic field-effect transistor devices using two-side pi-extended rubrene were fabricated, demonstrating the potential utility of these compounds in organic electronics with a comparable carrier mobility to rubrene thin-film transistors.

Synthesis of triphenylene-based hierarchically porous monolith with nitroaromatic-sensitive fluorescence

Chinnadurai Satheeshkumar et al.

Summary: In this study, a synthetic route based on radical polymerization was developed to produce a fluorescent monolithic hierarchically porous polymer composed of extended pi-conjugated triphenylene motifs. Microphase separation and removal of polylactide generated controllable mesopores and exposed micropores within the polymer network. The resulting porous monolith exhibited strong bluish fluorescence, which could be quenched upon exposure to nitroaromatic compounds.

A multifunctional Schiff base with aggregation-induced enhanced emission, gelation, and mechanochromic properties for anti-counterfeiting applications

Hina Goyal et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates three closely related Schiff bases, NpSB, AnSB, and PySB, for their potential applications in aggregation-induced enhanced emission, gelation, and mechanochromism. The results show that AnSB and PySB exhibit aggregation-induced enhanced emission, while PySB also forms a stable gel in DMF-water. Among the three Schiff bases, PySB demonstrates reversible mechanochromism. The change in color and emission profile of PySB under pressure or mechanical force is attributed to the alteration of its molecular packing, involving the slippage of pyrene rings and the conversion of intramolecular H-bonding to intermolecular H-bonding. The reversible morphological changes of PySB further confirm its potential applications in anti-counterfeiting and pressure-induced systems.

A theoretical exploration of different zr-zr stacking dimers of coronenes and its substituted analogues

Amar Ningthoujam et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the geometry, zr-interactions, and band gaps of coronene and its mono heteroatom substituted analogues. The substitution of carbon with boron or nitrogen in coronene was found to affect the interplanar zr-interactions, band gaps, and stabilization energies. Different polymorphs arising from dimers formed through zr-zr stacking interactions were theoretically explored. The band gaps of the substituted coronene dimers were found to be reduced compared to the monomers, with a greater reduction observed in nitrogen-substituted coronene dimers. The substituted coronene dimers were also found to be significantly more stabilized than the unsubstituted coronene dimers.

Summary: Planarized triarylboranes are promising materials for organic optoelectronics due to their high chemical stability and pi-stacking ability. In this study, we developed a robust synthesis of fully fused boron-doped PAHs and investigated their self-assembly behavior in aqueous media. These compounds exhibited red emission in solution and could be modified to enhance their fluorescence brightness. The Lewis acidity of these compounds increased slightly in polar solvents, and they showed photo-dissociation behavior in the excited state. The amphiphilic derivative formed sheet-like aggregates in DMSO/H2O mixed media and their disassembly and assembly processes could be controlled externally.

Summary: This study reports the development of a mechanochromic mechanophore based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) for real-time strain sensing in polyurethane films. The mechanophore exhibited high sensitivity and excellent reversibility to stress, and the mechanochromism was attributed to chain-transduced force.
