Effect of the Substrate to Inoculum Ratios on the Kinetics of Biogas Production during the Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste

Aakash Khadka et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of varying substrate to inoculum ratios on biogas production during anaerobic digestion of simulated food waste. The results show that the substrate to inoculum ratio has a significant impact on biogas production, with the ratio of 1 showing the highest production rate and the ratio of 6 showing the lowest. The maximum predicted biogas yields are 668.65 NmL/gVS and 653.17 NmL/gVS according to different models. The study also reveals a significant effect of the substrate to inoculum ratio on the kinetics and energy recovery of anaerobic digestion.

Enhanced biogas production from food waste and activated sludge using advanced techniques-A review

Santhana Raj Deena et al.

Summary: Biogas generation through anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and activated sludge is an excellent solution to address global challenges and meet increasing energy demands, while also providing a cleaner alternative for pollution and wastewater treatment. However, the efficiency and stability of this technology are hindered by irregularities in the substrate. Adjusting process parameters, optimizing substrate composition, and adding biochar as an additive can enhance the efficiency and outcome of the system.

How weak static magnetic field contributes to rapid granulation and better performance of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge?

Yuqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study applied a static magnetic field to accelerate the granulation of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) in photo-sequencing batch reactors. The magnetic field significantly promoted microbial growth, sludge settleability, and granule density, leading to rapid granulation and improved performance in MBGS. The magnetic field also enhanced nitrogen removal and increased the specific oxygen production rate and specific oxygen uptake rate in MBGS. The accumulation of metal ions, production of extracellular polymeric substances, and enrichment of functional bacteria and phototrophs contributed to the successful granulation of MBGS. This study provides an effective and environmentally-friendly method for rapid cultivation of MBGS.

Enhanced Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Primary Sewage Sludge

Foteini Sakaveli et al.

Summary: The anaerobic digestion of primary sludge alone yielded higher methane production compared to the digestion of mixed primary and secondary sludge, and the addition of organic polyelectrolyte and attapulgite further increased methane production. Attapulgite improved the hydrolysis rate of biosolids and produced relatively stable digestate, although with lower dewaterability. This study suggests that single digestion of primary sludge can achieve higher methane production with lower digester volumes, increasing overall efficiency and productivity.
