Highly Luminescent Blue Emitter with Balanced Hybridized Locally and Charge-Transfer Excited-States Emission

J. Wiefermann et al.

Summary: In this study, the optoelectronic properties of a previously reported blue emitter were thoroughly investigated. Lippert-Mataga analysis of the emission spectra in different solvents revealed charge transfer contributions to the first singlet excited state, S-1. Quantum chemical calculations showed a balanced local excitation and charge transfer character of the S-1 state, and also suggested the presence of a nearby local excitation triplet state, T-2. Finally, organic light emitting diodes (OLED) demonstrated blue emission at 451 nm with an external quantum efficiency of 2% and an internal quantum efficiency of around 10%.

TADF quenching properties of phenothiazine or phenoxazine-substituted benzanthrones emitting in deep-red/near-infrared region towards oxygen sensing

Uliana Tsiko et al.

Summary: By combining benzanthrone, phenothiazine, and phenoxazine moieties, new materials with TADF properties in the deep-red/near-infrared region were successfully developed, as well as compounds suitable for oxygen sensing applications. Different substituents on the benzanthrone moiety were found to result in varying oxygen sensitivity, with one compound exhibiting good reversibility under oxygen isotope ratio influence.

Rational Molecular Design Enables Efficient Blue TADF-OLEDs with Flexible Graphene Substrate

Parisa Sharif et al.

Summary: Observation of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) has revolutionized the molecular design of highly efficient OLEDs. The effectiveness of TADF is largely determined by the first-order mixing coefficient (lambda) and the difference between singlet and triplet excited state energies (Delta E-ST). While Delta E-ST has been the main focus, the influence of spin-orbit coupling (H-SO) has been overlooked. In this study, TADF materials with increased H-SO are achieved by substituting heteroatoms with heavy-atom selenium, resulting in remarkable EQEs.

Cyclophane Molecules Exhibiting Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence: Linking Donor Units to Influence Molecular Conformation

Matthias Hempe et al.

Summary: This study presents a synthetic methodology to covalently link donors to form cyclophane-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules, showing that the cyclophane molecular architecture alters the conformational distribution of the donor units and retains rotational freedom crucial for efficient TADF. Despite their different structures, cyclophanes and their nonbridged precursors exhibit similar photophysical properties emitting through similar excited states. Linking donor units to form a cyclophane suppresses detrimental conformations, establishing a versatile strategy while maintaining excellent photophysical properties.

3,10-Diaryl Phenothiazines - One-pot Synthesis and Conformational Tuning of Ground and Excited State Electronics

Laura Mayer et al.

Summary: A wide range of electronically diverse 3,10-diaryl phenothiazines was synthesized using a sequential Pd-catalyzed three-component arylation-amination method with good yields. The study investigated the electronic properties of these compounds comprehensively through absorption and emission spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and quantum chemical calculations. Fine-tuning of the electronic properties was achieved through fundamental conformational changes and introduction of different remote electronic substituents.

Dynamic adjustment of emission from both singlets and triplets: the role of excited state conformation relaxation and charge transfer in phenothiazine derivates

Weidong Qiu et al.

Summary: This study constructs phenothiazine derivatives with planar structure in the ground state through linking phenothiazine moiety with nitrogen heterocycles, leading to dynamic tunable fluorescence and phosphorescence in the excited state. Multiple emissions including fluorescence and phosphorescence were observed with reduced ICT character, while strong spin mixing between singlet and triplet occurred in twisted TICT state when increasing ICT, favoring short triplet lifetime. The emission of TADF or short RTP depends on the allowance or forbidden of fluorescence in the twisted excited state conformation.
