Design of Heterometallic {LnIII-MV} (Ln = Dy, Er; M = W, Mo) Molecular Nanomagnets: Protonation Induced Structural Diversification

Pan-Dong Mao et al.

Summary: The construction of lanthanide-based molecular magnets using self-assembly strategy is a hot research topic. In this work, the self-assembly reaction of trivalent lanthanide ions, multidentate ligands, and octacyanometallate building blocks was reported. Different types of cyanobridged complexes were obtained and characterized. The magnetic analysis showed that some of these complexes exhibit field-induced single-molecule magnet behaviors.

Understanding the magnetic anisotropy for linear sandwich [Er(COT)]+-based compounds: a theoretical investigation

Man-Man Ding et al.

Summary: The study investigated the magneto-structural correlations of linear sandwich single-ion magnets containing [Er(COT)](+) fragment using ab initio methods. The research found that an equatorially coordinating geometry is preferable for achieving high axial anisotropy and a medium ligand ring can induce energy splitting and quantum tunneling of magnetization. Additionally, the study confirmed that the energy barrier of the model created was the largest, although smaller than Dy-III-based compounds.

Largely Enhancing the Blocking Energy Barrier and Temperature of a Linear Cobalt(II) Complex through the Structural Distortion: A Theoretical Exploration

Fang Lu et al.

Summary: By investigating a two-coordinate cobalt(II) compound, it was found that altering the Co-C bond lengths and twist angle phi had an impact on the magnetic anisotropy. While decreasing the Co-C bond lengths reduced the energy barrier, rotating the twist angle phi from 60 to 0 degrees surprisingly increased the energy barrier and blocking temperature significantly.

Tuning the Equatorial Negative Charge in Hexagonal Bipyramidal Dysprosium(III) Single-Ion Magnets to Improve the Magnetic Behavior

Xingwei Cai et al.

Summary: By taking advantage of pentaethylene glycol and deprotonation of pentaethylene glycol, a new family of structurally hexagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Magnetic measurements showed different magnetic behaviors among the complexes, with complex 1 exhibiting zero-field single-ion magnet behavior and complexes 2 and 3 showing slow magnetic relaxation only under an external magnetic field. Detailed calculations revealed that the equatorial negative charge and axial ligands play a crucial role in the magnetic anisotropy and quantum tunneling. The absence of equatorial negative charge should be considered in the rational design of promising single molecular magnets based on oblate ions.

Summary: Dinuclear complexes [M(H3L1,2,4)](2) (M = Dy, Dy-2; M = Ho, Ho-2) were isolated from a heptadentate aminophenol ligand, with the dysprosium complex showing the largest energy barrier to date for this type of double phenoxide-bridged complexes. The holmium complex exhibits frequency-dependence but does not display field-induced SMM behavior above 2 K. Ab initio calculations were used to understand the magnetic properties of the complexes, which supported the experimental magnetic results.

Evolution from a single relaxation process to two-step relaxation processes of Dy2 single-molecule magnets via the modulations of the terminal solvent ligands

Dawei Li et al.

Summary: By elaborately designing different terminal solvent ligands, three Dy-2 complexes were successfully synthesized with single-molecule magnet behaviors. The observed differences in the magnetic behavior of the complexes were rationalized by performing CASSCF calculations. The complexes with higher local symmetries of central metals acted as SMMs with higher energy barriers, while a smaller theta angle and different symmetries of the Dy-III ions resulted in a complex with a two-step relaxation process.
