Enhancement of Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Activity of 2D π-Conjugated Bipyridine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks via Post-Protonation

Lu Dai et al.

Summary: This study focuses on COFs-based photocatalysts, in which a 2D fully conjugated ethylene-linked COF (BTT-BPy-COF) with active sites was fabricated. A post-protonation strategy was employed to fine-tune the active sites, leading to improved charge-separation efficiency and increased hydrophilicity. The optimized BTT-BPy-PCOF exhibited a remarkable H-2 evolution rate under visible light, surpassing a biphenyl-based COF 6 times. Post-protonation was proven to be a potential universal strategy for promoting photocatalytic H-2 evolution and providing important guidance for the design of highly efficient organic semiconductor photocatalysts.

A Bismuth-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Decolorization of Dyes and Oxidation of Phenylboronic Acids

Longfei Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, a Bi-based metal-organic framework (Bi-MMTAA) was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined. Theoretical calculations and experimental results showed that Bi-MMTAA is a p-type semiconductor with favorable photoelectrical properties. Bi-MMTAA can produce free electrons under visible light and exhibit photocatalytic activity for the decolorization of RhB and the oxidation of phenylboronic acid to phenol. These findings contribute to the exploration of Bi-based MOFs and their potential applications.

Reversible, Red-Shifted Photoisomerization in Protonated Azobenzenes

Jonas Rickhoff et al.

Summary: Azobenzenes are well-studied molecular photoswitches and are important in the search for red-shifted photoresponsive materials. The current approaches mostly rely on aromatic substitution patterns to achieve visible light application, sometimes combined with protonation to produce red-shifted azonium species. This study demonstrates that steady-state protonation of the azo-bridge is possible in simple azobenzenes, leading to the formation of both Z- and E-azonium species. Protonation of para-methoxyazobenzene specifically yields photoisomerizable azonium ions with reversed switching direction under visible light irradiation.

Visible Light-Initiated Synergistic/Cascade Reactions over Metal-Organic Frameworks

Mingming Hao et al.

Summary: One-pot synergistic/cascade reactions are a promising direction for future catalysis, with increasing attention on utilizing solar light to initiate these reactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising multifunctional catalysts for light-initiated synergistic/cascade reactions due to their excellent photoactive activity and unique structural characteristics. This review summarizes recent developments on using MOFs for light-initiated one-pot synergistic/cascade reactions, highlighting the challenges and future prospects in developing smart multifunctional MOFs for these reactions.

Post-synthetic modifications (PSM) on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for visible-light-initiated photocatalysis

Yuhuan Qin et al.

Summary: Utilizing solar energy through photocatalysis is a promising strategy for addressing energy shortages and environmental issues. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as a new type of photocatalytic material, with post-synthetic modifications (PSM) being a powerful strategy for fabricating photoactive MOFs based on existing MOFs. Various PSM strategies, including coordination on unsaturated metal sites, metalation on open coordinated sites, and ligand exchange, have been summarized for the development of photoactive MOFs.
