Artificial Nacre with High Toughness Amplification Factor: Residual Stress-Engineering Sparks Enhanced Extrinsic Toughening Mechanisms

Yu-Feng Meng et al.

Summary: The fracture toughness of artificial nacre materials with high inorganic contents can be improved by residual stress-induced platelet strengthening, catalyzing more effective extrinsic toughening mechanisms. Although the intrinsic fracture toughness may decrease at the platelet level due to strengthening, the overall fracture toughness can be enhanced by these unconventional strategies.

A Bioinspired Ultratough Composite Produced by Integration of Inorganic Ionic Oligomers within Polymer Networks

Yadong Yu et al.

Summary: Inspired by bone structure, a highly tough nanocomposite laminate is developed by integrating ultrasmall inorganic building units into an organic-inorganic hierarchical structure. The resulting laminate exhibits ultrahigh bending strain and toughness, surpassing natural and synthetic laminates. The mechanics of this material can be tunable by changing the water content.

Complex morphologies of biogenic crystals emerge from anisotropic growth of symmetry-related facets

Emanuel M. Avrahami et al.

Summary: This study reveals that complex crystalline morphologies can be achieved by manipulating the growth rate. Using electron tomography, the researchers examined the development of coccolith crystals in three dimensions and found that the crystals express only one set of symmetry-related crystallographic facets, with the positioning of the crystals along specific edges contributing to morphological chirality.

Biomineralization: Integrating mechanism and evolutionary history

Pupa U. P. A. Gilbert et al.

Summary: Calcium carbonate biomineralizing organisms have had significant roles in the history of life and the global carbon cycle. By integrating mechanisms of CaCO3 skeleton formation with evolutionary history, omics, and isotopic data, a model for CaCO3 biomineralization applicable to all phyla is proposed, aiding in understanding the environmental sensitivity of marine calcifiers and their resilience in 21st century acidifying oceans.

A damage-tolerant, dual-scale, single-crystalline microlattice in the knobby starfish, Protoreaster nodosus

Ting Yang et al.

Summary: An unusual dual-scale, single-crystalline microlattice with lattice-level structural gradients and dislocations was found in the biomineralized skeleton of the knobby starfish. This structure, aligned with the c-axis of calcite at the atomic scale, enhances the damage tolerance of the hierarchical biological microlattice, providing important insights for designing synthetic architected cellular solids.

Tubular Structures of Calcium Carbonate: Formation, Characterization, and Implications in Natural Mineral Environments

Melese Getenet et al.

Summary: Chemical gardens are self-assembled tubular precipitates formed by osmosis, buoyancy, and chemical reaction, with potential for catalyzing prebiotic condensation reactions. Silica gardens have become of interest in materials science as microreactors due to their ability to generate long-lasting electrochemical potential. In contrast, macroscopic calcium carbonate tubes have a bilayer structure with high crystallinity, limiting significant electrochemical potential differences and suggesting potential implications in materials science and prebiotic (geo)chemistry.

PbI2-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunctions with Long-Range Ordering for X-ray Detectors

Quan Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, TiO2 networks were incorporated into PbI2 crystals to form interpenetrating type II heterojunctions, namely BHJs, which exhibited long-range ordering in molecular packing similar to that of single crystals. Compared with single crystals, these BHJs facilitated the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes to inhibit recombination, extending the mobility lifetime product by 6.4 times and improving X-ray sensitivity by 5.8 times. This work provides a new strategy using gel-grown crystals to fabricate high-performance X-ray detectors and a new platform for studying the behavior of X-ray-generated carriers in BHJs with long-range ordering.
