Origin of the different reactivity of the high-valent coinage-metal complexes [RCuIIIMe3]- and [RAgIIIMe3]- (R=allyl)

Thomas Auth et al.

Summary: High-valent tetraalkylcuprates(III) and -argentates(III) are key intermediates in copper- and silver-mediated C-C coupling reactions. Through experiments and calculations, it was found that copper complexes predominantly undergo homo-coupling reactions, while silver complexes primarily undergo cross-coupling reactions. The outer-sphere mechanism was proposed to explain the observed cross-coupling reaction of the silver complex.

Bonding and the role of electrostatics in driving C-C bond formation in high valent organocopper compounds

Jason Shearer et al.

Summary: The electronic structures and reactivity of [Cu(CF3)(4)](-) and [Cu(CF3)(3)(CH3)](-) were studied, revealing that the Cu-C bonds in these complexes are charge shift bonds. It was found that electrostatics likely hinder the formation of a productive transition state for C-C bond formation in [Cu(CF3)(4)](-), while promoting one in [Cu(CF3)(3)(CH3)](-). These findings provide important design criteria for Cu-mediated C-C/C-heteroatom bond formation.

Summary: This study analyzed the different reactivity of high-valent tetraalkylcuprates(III) and -argentates(III) in copper- and silver-mediated C-C coupling reactions through gas-phase fragmentation experiments, quantum-chemical calculations, and kinetic computations, revealing key mechanisms in the process.

Tetraorganylargentate(III) Complexes: Key Intermediates in Silver-Mediated Cross-Coupling Reactions

Marius Deuker et al.

Summary: The use of silver as a catalyst in cross-coupling reactions has potential, with high-valent species readily undergoing reductive elimination. Experimentally observed trends in reactivity are reproduced by quantum chemical calculations, providing insight into the structures and energetics of the species involved. These findings suggest that silver-mediated cross-coupling reactions can be a viable alternative to established synthetic methods.
