Intercalation Chemistry of the Disordered Rocksalt Li3V2O5 Anode from Cluster Expansions and Machine Learning Interatomic Potentials

Shyue Ping Ong et al.

Summary: In this study, the intercalation chemistry of DRX-Li3V2O5 anode was investigated using DFT calculations, machine learning cluster expansions, and interatomic potentials. The study found that Li ions mainly intercalate into tetrahedral sites during charging, while a majority of Li and V ions at octahedral sites remain stable. Molecular dynamics simulations attributed the fast-charging capability of DRX-Li3V2O5 to the facile diffusivity of Li+ via a tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral pathway. This work provides insights into the high-performance DRX-Li3V2O5 anode and suggests avenues for the discovery of other disordered anode materials.

Rational material design of Li-excess metal oxides with disordered rock salt structure

Naoaki Yabuuchi

Summary: This review article summarizes recent research development on a new class of electrode materials with a cation-disordered rock salt structure for energy storage applications. Historically, oxide-based electrode materials with the disordered rock salt structure are regarded as electrochemically inactive. However, recent experimental and theoretical research reveals that many oxides with the disordered rock salt structure can be utilized as high-capacity electrode materials, which deliver a much larger reversible capacity compared with traditional and cation ordered layered materials used for practical battery applications. For these emerging electrode materials, higher energy density is achieved relying on anionic and/or cationic redox as multi-electron reactions. Moreover, this anionic/cationic redox for Li-excess materials with the rock salt structure is effectively activated for nano-sized materials. These new trends for the material design on high-capacity electrode materials are highlighted and the future direction to design Li/Na insertion materials for energy storage applications is outlooked.

Effect of Disorder and Doping on Electronic Structure and Diffusion Properties of Li3V2O5

Mohammad Babar et al.

Summary: In this study, the variation in structural distortion, electronic structure, and migration barrier accompanied by disorder in V2O5 was investigated using first-principles calculations. The segregation of lithium atoms in the disordered state led to greater distortion, emergence of metallic behavior, and potential anionic activity. Redox capacity can be tuned by doping with 3d metals and fluorine substitution, which can adjust participating cationic and anionic states, respectively. The suppression of anionic activity was found to decrease structural distortion, which is crucial in mitigating voltage fade and hysteresis. Diffusion barrier calculations in the presence of disorder explained the fast-charging ability observed in experiments.
