New measurement system based on small-angle neutron scattering for structural analysis of light-responsive materials

Hiroki Iwase et al.

Summary: A new sample environment has been developed for simultaneous measurement of small-angle neutron scattering and UV-Vis absorption, allowing the analysis of structural changes in light-responsive materials. The system was used to observe the UV-Vis irradiation-induced structural change of micelles formed by a light-responsive surfactant. The results provide direct information on the interplay between changes in micelle structure and changes in molecular configuration.

Photoresponsive Supramolecular Polymers: From Light-Controlled Small Molecules to Smart Materials

Fan Xu et al.

Summary: Photoresponsive supramolecular polymers are highly organized assemblies with photosensitive molecules as monomers, showing reversible changes in geometry, dipole moment, and chirality upon light stimuli. They have broad applications in smart materials, including light-driven soft actuators, fluorescent anticounterfeiting, and light-triggered electronic devices. This review focuses on the light-activated molecules used in photoresponsive supramolecular polymers and the different changes induced by light. It also highlights the disassembly, reassembly, actuation, emission, and chirality transfer of these polymers. Future opportunities and challenges, such as using visible/near IR light and enabling biomedical applications, are also discussed.

Controlled recombination rate of lophyl radicals in cationic surfactant micelles

Masaaki Akamatsu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to control the recombination rate of lophyl radicals in micelles formed by cationic surfactants with different alkyl chain lengths. The results showed that the recombination rate was enhanced in micellar solutions with shorter alkyl chain surfactants compared to those with longer alkyl chain surfactants. Small-angle neutron scattering measurements revealed that elliptical micelles were formed in mixtures of the surfactant and the lophine dimer derivative, with a smaller inner volume observed when shorter chain surfactants were used. Evaluation of kinetic parameters indicated a higher randomness of the lophyl radicals in the micelles with shorter surfactant chains. These findings suggest that the size of the confined space formed by the micelles plays a crucial role in determining the recombination rate of lophyl radicals.

Self-Assembly of Photoresponsive Molecular Amphiphiles in Aqueous Media

Shaoyu Chen et al.

Summary: Amphiphilic molecules with the ability to self-assemble in aqueous environments exhibit a wide range of structures and functions. By incorporating photoresponsive motifs, these molecules can be designed to create non-invasive supramolecular systems that respond to light in water. The delicate balance between structural design, self-assembling conditions, and external stimuli allows for the development of dynamic functions in isotropic and anisotropic systems, leading to applications in soft adaptive materials and controlled delivery systems.
