Greywater treatment by anodic oxidation, photoelectro-Fenton and solar photoelectro-Fenton processes: Influence of relevant parameters and toxicity evolution

Paulo Renato dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the suitability of factorial design for the treatment of greywater (GW) containing dodecyl-benzene sulfonic acid (LAS) using electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs). Anodic oxidation with electrogenerated H2O2 (AO-H2O2) and photoelectro Fenton (PEF) processes were studied at bench scale using a factorial design. The optimized conditions for the AO-H2O2 process resulted in a 76% degradation of LAS and 52% TOC removal, while the optimized conditions for the PEF process led to a 63% degradation of LAS and 78% TOC abatement. The solar PEF (SPEF) process with a compound parabolic collector (CPC) as a solar reactor showed a 70% removal of LAS and a 55% mineralization of GW after 240 minutes of treatment.

Removal of contaminants of emerging concern by solar photo electro-Fenton process in a solar electrochemical raceway pond reactor*

Sebastian Campos et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of solar electrochemical raceway pond reactor (SECRPR) with solar photo electro-Fenton (SPFE) process to degrade emerging contaminants of concern (CECs) in municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent. The results show that 96% and 90% elimination of 5 CECs (progesterone, estradiol, ibuprofen, diclofenac and estrone) was achieved, while sulfamethazine and carbamazepine were eliminated by 73%, 37% and 80%, 66% respectively. The SPFE process implemented in a SEC-RPR proves to be an excellent alternative for the treatment of municipal wastewater due to its large contact area between the effluent and UV radiation, continuous and homogeneous generation of H2O2, and production of hydroxyl radicals in solution, enhancing the degradation and mineralization of pollutants.

The antibacterial activities of MoS2 nanosheets towards multi-drug resistant bacteria

Yingcan Zhao et al.

Summary: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets have been shown to be an excellent solar disinfection agent for multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria, achieving disinfection efficiencies >99.9999% in just 30 minutes. The high antibacterial efficiencies of MoS2 are attributed to both the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the reduction in size of the nanosheets.
