Iminoacylation of Alkenes via Photoredox N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis

Yi-Xiong Dong et al.

Summary: The iminoacylation of alkenes was achieved through photoredox N heterocyclic carbene catalysis using alkene-tethered alpha-imino-oxy acids and acyl imidazoles. The reaction resulted in the formation of substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles with moderate to good yields and good to high diastereoselectivities in most cases. This reaction involves the 5-exo-trig radical cyclization of an alkene-tethered iminyl radical and subsequent coupling with a ketyl radical from acyl imidazole under NHC catalysis.

A Highly Enantioselective Homoenolate Michael Addition/Esterification Sequence of Cyclohexadienone-Tethered Enals via NHC Catalysis

Ya-Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Here, a highly enantioselective homoenolate Michael addition/esterification sequence of cyclo-hexadienone-tethered enals via N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis is reported, leading to the formation of enantiopure cis-hydrobenzofurans, cis-hydroindoles, and cis-hydroindenes. The introduction of a nitro group in the NHC catalyst greatly enhances the stereocontrol, while a bulky N-aryl substituent in the triazolium salt is beneficial for preventing further aldol condensation. The utility of this method is demonstrated through a gram-scale experiment and versatile downstream transformations.

Chirality transfer from a 3D macro shape to the molecular level by controlling asymmetric secondary flows

Semih Sevim et al.

Summary: This article presents an example of chirality transfer from the chiral shape of a 3D helical channel to chiral supramolecular aggregates, where the handedness of the helical channel determines the direction of enantioselection. By combining numerical simulations and experimental data, the authors demonstrate the possibility of controlling enantioselectively molecular processes at the nanometer scale by modulating the geometry and operating conditions of fluidic reactors.

Photo-induced energy transfer relay of N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis: an asymmetric α-fluorination/isomerization cascade

Xinhang Jiang et al.

Summary: The geometric configuration of olefin products is often controlled by thermodynamics in synthesis, with few methods enabling switching of cis/trans selectivity. However, photosensitized approaches have recently emerged as a powerful tool for accomplishing this task. By utilizing a photo-induced energy transfer process, selective access of chiral allylic fluorides with a cis-olefin geometry is achieved through in situ isomerization of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-bound intermediate. Preliminary mechanistic experiments suggest the involvement of an energy transfer process in this transformation.
