Processing of Korolevo samples aimed at AMS determination of in situ10Be and 26Al nuclides and their purity control using follow-up mass spectrometry scans

Jan Kamenik et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the timing of early hominin occupation at Korolevo in western Ukraine. It began with the preparation and evaluation of samples to assess the impact of impurities on the determination of Be-10 and Al-26 using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Analyzed rock samples exhibited varying levels of weathering, lithology, and mass. Follow-up mass spectrometry scans revealed the presence of Ti impurity in BeO targets, prompting quantification of Ti in quartz concentrate. The Al-26 to Be-10 ratios were found to be independent of Ti and Al impurity for samples from the same depositional level. The reduction in AMS Be current was a result of BeO dilution by TiO2 molecules.

Alternative approach to study chemical processes for the preparation of 10Be and 26Al targets for AMS

Jan Kamenik et al.

Summary: Two established separation procedures for determining in-situ produced 10Be and 26Al in quartz were tested for their efficiency and robustness. The use of radioactive 7Be tracer allowed for non-destructive measurement of Be during the experiment, while INAA had the advantage of determining Al in separation sub-samples with variable matrix composition. Both methods proved to be sufficient in developing, calibrating, and controlling the separation process, even when using a solution with a more complex composition.

A new AMS facility MILEA at the Nuclear Physics Institute in Rez, Czech Republic

Jan Kucera et al.

Summary: The performance of the new Multi-Isotope Low-Energy AMS (MILEA) system, developed by Ionplus AG and ETH Zurich in Switzerland, for determining various isotopes was described based on acceptance tests conducted at both the producer and customer sites. The measured parameters included transmissions, currents, radioisotope/stable blank ratios, and sample scatter of the radioisotope/stable isotope ratios, showing competitive results with larger AMS systems.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Be-10 and Al-26 targets processed using different methods and measured at different AMS facilities can lead to consistent results, with the exception of decreased Al-26 results if insoluble fluoride precipitates are formed during processing.

Determination of iodine-129 in twenty soil and sediment reference materials

Luyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of I-129 and I-127 in twenty Chinese soil and sediment CRMs and one in-house soil standard material. The results showed that the I-129 concentrations in these CRMs and the laboratory soil standard were 1-4 orders of magnitude lower than those of the current reference materials. The study also discussed the significant salinity effect on AMS measurement, and recommended an analytical procedure for low- and high-salinity soil and sediment samples.
